The Express never stops going on about it which is more than likely an indicator that it's not a smear campaign at all, more a series of unfortunate events leading to a loss of confidence in the AZ vaccine. The politicians haven't helped but calling it a smear campaign is stretching things a bit. Don't forget that AZ is Swedish as much as British and has a Swedish chairman and a French CEO so the EU have nothing to gain by attacking one its own most successful companies even if it is shared with the UK.
So because the Express reports it its not true? Would it be different if the Guardian or Independent reported it?

SCOTLAND DATA

MORE GOOD NEWS

1 death - was 0 last week

799 cases - was 1000 last week

6.5% positivity - was 8.0% last week

407 patients - down 15 on yesterday - was 475 last week

60 ventilated icu beds - down 2 on yesterday - was 65 last week

The hospital numbers going the right way is the key to this.

When it comes to matters of the EU, Europe or Brexit anything in The Express is guaranteed to be a lie, or at least a half-truth spun so far as to make it basically a lie.

The Express is about as factually correct as the Beano, and about as funny.

Even compared to the Mail, Sun and Telegraph it's a comic that specialises in parodies.

If he Guardian and independent report something it may not be true, if the Express report it , it's pretty much guaranteed not to be true.

If it's plateauing at this level, that is something we could learn to live with quite easily. With typical deaths from all causes at around 9000 per week for this time of year the proportion that are Covid related will be quite a way down the list and well into the noise of typical week to week variations. In fact, from the graph below, the third wave hasn't noticeably registered at all on the UK death rate thanks to the vaccination programme.
