Well that's down to medical ethics NOT the government, other than the government letting appropriate medical bodies (MHRA, JCVI, etc) make the decisions of course.

Absolutely, I don't have any beef with the government on this (other than perhaps the brief they set JCVI, but that's quibbling). Indeed the government took the step of bypassing JCVI and going direct to CMOs to belatedly get it moving.

The JCVI seem to be totally out of step with most UK and global medical opinion on this. As you see from the very high vax rates already achieved in the age group across much of Europe.

TODAY'S UPDATE

MORE BIG RISES TODAY SADLY HERE

Predicted cases are

UP FROM 53, 592 TO 55, 710 a rise of of 2118 after rises of 2658, 683, 2306, 1645, 1219 & 622 & 719 in the days before.

It WAS 44, 459 last week - a RISE week to week of 11, 133 after rise of 9852 yesterday - biggest jump up in ages.

PERHAPS THIS IS THE SCHOOL RISE IN ENGLAND DELAYED?

Ongoing symptomatic cases UP too -

FROM 666, 301 TO 670, 505 A RISE of 4204 after a rise of 2654 yesterday and FALLS of 717,1399, 3489 in past week.

IT WAS 658, 507 last week. A weekly RISE of 7794 after a weekly rise of 1884 yesterday and from weekly falls of 5392, 4562, 16, 521, and 36, 638 in previous days.

WELL AND TRULY SHIFTED DIRECTION NOW

There is always a lag to the change in ongoing cases after a rise or fall in daily case numbers as ongoing cases persist and are not just counted on the day of first report.

ZOE APP DATA

TODAYS DATA

REGIONS:-

AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT FROM THE RISING CASES NO GOOD NEWS HERE EITHER

North West moves stays in FOURTH place but as feared yesterday now UP into the upper watch zone after another big rise today

NORTH WEST UP to 885 / 1167 FROM 852 / 1127

UP TOP:-

THERE ARE FIVE NOW IN THE HIGHEST WATCH ZONE

WALES STILL FIRST but DOWN a little (as today's real case drop supports) on 1059 / 1473 FROM 1067 / 1479

YORKSHIRE (unsurprising given its real numbers lately topping the NW yesterday for first time in a while too then) moves UP to second on Zoe rising again today. On 901 / 1225 FROM 887 / 1206

NORTHERN IRELAND falls to third - DOWN on 577 / 1613 FROM 585 / 1630

SADLY THE NW RISE IS THE BIGGEST OF THE ABOVE

NORTH EAST also moves UP into the top watch zone to fifth behind the NORTH WEST and actually rises by more than any of the four above including NW - UP to 789 / 1264 FROM 745 / 1206

THERE ARE NOW JUST THREE REGIONS IN THE MIDDLE WATCH ZONE

EAST MIDLANDS is sixth UP by even more today on 846 / 1164 FROM 778 / 1083 .

And SCOTLAND in seventh is DOWN today - on 721 / 1017 FROM 734 / 1032

And moving up a zone into here from the lower one is

WEST MIDLANDS in eighth is up by the biggest rise on 666 / 950 FROM 612 / 881

THE LOWER WATCH ZONE NOW CONTAINS ALL SOUTHERN REGIONS - THE GEOGRAPHICAL SPLIT NORTH/SOUTH NOW TOTAL MUCH AS IN THE REAL CASE DATA - THOUGH MOST PLACES ARE GOING UP A LOT EVEN HERE

AT THE BOTTOM (AS IN BEST IN UK) ARE THE SOUTHERN REGIONS:-

SOUTH WEST is now BEST in the UK again - but UP BIG on 539 / 724 FROM 485 / 661

SOUTH EAST next lowest is UP big too on 581 / 722 FROM 540 / 673

LONDON is next but UP a bit less on 579 / 764 FROM 566 / 747

EAST is the closest to moving up into the middle watch zone UP on 607 / 803 FROM 582 / 773

So all the southern regions some way back of the rest of the UK but also going UP

TODAY

GREATER MANCHESTER:-

Rochdale retains top spot - UP on 14, 986 FROM 13, 658

Wigan rises too in second UP on 14, 684 FROM 11, 941

Tameside is up into third also UP - on 12, 246 FROM 10, 923 pulling ahead of Stockport which looks more right than usual here

Stockport drops to fourth but edges UP too on 11, 889 FROM 11, 040 - most in 8 days but only by few hundred and been in the 10s and 11s now for 10 days. So pretty flat given all the regional rises.

Bury edges DOWN in fifth on 10, 884 FROM 10, 894.

NOW ONLY HALF THE BOROUGHS LEFT IN THE LOWER WATCH ZONE BUT NOBODY IN THE UPPER ONE BAR ROCHDALE IN THERE BY MUCH.

Manchester is sixth up a little and threatening to go into the upper watch zone on 9840 FROM 9237

Oldham moves up to seventh after a fourth consecutive rise also UP closing in on the upper watrch zone on 9658 FROM 8349

Trafford is eighth also UP for fifth day running and like Manchester flirting with the upper tier too - UP on 9490 FROM 8378

THIS LEAVES JUST TWO BOROUGHS NOT REALLY FLIRTING WITH 10K OR OVER:-

Bolton edges UP too in ninth for fifth day running on 6373 FROM 5603

BUT STILL EASILY BEST IN GM AFTER WEEKS OF DAILY FALLS IN THE REAL DATA IS STILL :-

Salford - also UP very little again but a rise for the second day running on 3509 FROM 3491

REST OF NORTH WEST

St Helens is DOWN again on 13, 402 FROM 16, 084 - steay falls here.

Liverpool is DOWN too after days of falls and no longer above all of GM on 14, 575 FROM 16, 769

Sefton slightly DOWN too on 13, 214 FROM 13. 709

Warrington also DOWN slightly on 11, 704 FROM 12, 542

THESE FALLS ARE A BIG REASON IN WHY GM NUMBERS V NORTH WEST HAVE NOT BEEN SO GOOD IN PAST FEW DAYS.

BUT THERE IS A NEW NORTH WEST HOT SPOT:- RIBBLE VALLEY

Up on 36, 928 FROM 36, 684 - EASILY THE MOST IN THE REGION

LAKE DISTRICT NORTH IS UP TOO ON 29, 712 FROM 29, 216 NOW THE SECOND HIGHEST IN THE NORTH WEST - WITH LANCASTER AND MORECAMBE UP tooy ON 19, 456 FROM 18, 975

BUT THE OTHER AREA OF CONCERN (sorry Andyhinch):-

Cheshire East which is still above Stockport and UP TODAY again to above all in GM once again.

UP to 16, 419 FROM 14, 928 - been consistently over Stockport for ten days now.

BUT still Chester and Cheshire West is higher - though flattened off and DOWN a tad on 19, 376 FROM 19, 813

Cheshire is now the main problem in the south of the NW region above where the Merseyside and surrounding boroughs have been for some weeks.

We've done well on vaccinations, but some countries are astonishing.

Portugal is about to remove all restrictions, having achieved 85% double vax coverage of the entire population vs our 65%. So they have less than half the number of unprotected people.

Some other countries added out of interest

Good to see New Zealand’s vaccination take up accelerating. They Kiwis have introduced vaccination buses and targeted help for the Maori population. It’s always harder to increase vaccine take up when you don’t have a localepidemic and the Delta outbreaks seem to be under (relatives) control. Down to around a dozen new cases per day.

I’ve read that vaccine passports and home quarantine (for Kiwi business travellers) are being introduced over the next couple of months.

With regard to the U.K, I think it’s enough for youngsters to be offered the vaccine without a big marketing push.

For the first time in ages today all three home nations have fallen in cases week to week on the same day and all four nations have fewer deaths (or in one case the same at just 4) than this day last week (usually the biggest day of all because of the weekend registration catch up).

Hope the news report on that fact.

England will likely buck that trend on cases later sadly.
