thats why poorer countries should be helped to enth degree to get them vaccinated, as they say were not safe until were all safe
Very tempting to agree but it wont be that simple. Scientists know how variants like alpha, beta and now omicron develop (in the immune compromised) but how do you get a population to take the vaccine? It's reported that South Africa has had to tell Pfizer to delay vaccine deliveries because their vaccination rates are low.

I hope you did but I think 100 days is what's been talked about before it can go into arms because it will need some testing.
We're so lucky that the traditional 10-15 years of testing has been reduced to 100 days. Hopefully the next round of jabs can be cooked up and put in arms by drones within a week.

The key for us in the UK is how effective are our immunity going to be against this new variant. I strongly suspect that Pfizer, and the experts already know because they have sequenced the virus. Once you sequence the genome, then you know the primary sequence of the protein that follows. And when you know the sequence of amino acids, you can predict the confirmation of the protein and then you can model whether antibodies will still bind to it. When they say that they have done desktop studies, that is what they mean. Then they have to move from 'in silico' to 'in vitro' and that is when they will know for sure.

I am hoping that the booster vaccine will hold off serious infection and then that will allow is a window to develop another vaccine, if it's needed. It has been reported that Valneva is due to deliver a whole virus inactivated vaccine to the EU in the 2nd quarter of 2022 and Pfizer, Moderna can develop new vaccines in 100 days. So we should be OK.

IMO we could have developed boosters and vaccines against Delta but the pharma industry did not bother because they knew another variant was on the way and it just wouldn't work producing a new vaccine every 6 months. People just wouldn't take them.
It's not Pfizer developing the vaccine, it's Biontec. I agree on the other parts

It's developed in about 6 weeks and the first charge is ready to go in 100 days. It's because they already have numerous variants of their vaccine in trials. There they already can test the tolerability of the variants.

100 days from lab to jab is really fast but it means we currently still need about 9 months to get most people boostered.

By which time the next variant will come along. The quicker people make peace with this the better. The flu jab is literally scientists' best guess as to what the variant will be each season.

I fully agree but there needs to be greater awareness and discussion about what that actually means. There are huge stockpiles of vaccinations in both South Africa and Uganda that are going to waste. It's partly to do with the logistics of administering them, of course, but it's also largely due to a vaccine hesitancy that is deeply rooted in cultural belief. That is a problem medicine faces around the world and one that predates this pandemic. The West can manufacture and deliver the vaccines but unless they get into the people, the risk of more and deadlier variants arising in countries such as South Africa remains.

They are a BTEC New Zealand

Israel is presumably concerned because it currently has low levels of Delta infection, which is not the case in the United Kingdom and certain European Union countries, so in that sense, it is in a similar position to South Africa where Omicron has little to compete with and can spread quickly. Israel will hope that its high vaccination levels will protect its citizens, but it does have around 11% unvaccinated.

I do feel the UK dither to much in actually enforcing any new restrictions. Whilst people from SA are forced into quarantine from today any arrivals over the last 2 days have been allowed in without any checks but simply asked to isolate at home. The Dutch took stricter measures and identified 61 positive covid cases from flights from there after isolating those flights whereas we allowed all our arrivals to mingle in arrivals with every other arrival. We impose mask wearing again but according to Sajid Javid today they are 'hoping' to bring this in from Tuesday. Why the delays it just seems that we are very good at shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.
I get that legislation may have to be passed but we have done that retrospectively in the past after conditions have been imposed. Everyone has a mask why do we have to wait a minimum of another two days before we have to start wearing them?

It was only the travelers on those two particular flights that were tested, and they were only tested because they happened to land at a time when the news had broken. The travelers that arrived at Schiphol from South Africa yesterday were not tested and flights between the two countries will continue.
