So just to recap:

You don't think negative media headlines have a detrimental impact on anybody's mental health?

And you don't think negative headlines about a downside to a vaccine will encourage some people to not take the vaccine?

Interesting thoughts.

This discussion is alarmist because it is being presented as a fork in the road between:

1) Herd immunity and near elimination of Covid through mass vaccination, and
2) Medicine. Turning the virus into a severe threat to a mild threat.

But recently Novovax reported that their clinical trial showed "The SARS-CoV-2 vaccine produced by the US biotechnology company Novavax is 95.6% effective against the original variant of SARS-CoV-2 but also provides protection against the newer variants B.1.1.7 (85.6%) and B.1.351 (60%)".

There are also the Chinese whole virus vaccines. I get confused with the names. Possibly Sionpharm which is a whole virus (inactivated) vaccine which may also still be very effective. Before we assume the worst, we should find out whether the Astrazeneca vaccine is truly rendered only 10% effective and what the outcome is with other vaccines. I don't think we really know yet and this is why there is so much confusion.

I agree though we don't want all this elitist nonsense of trust the government. They should be scrutinised and we need to know what the options are. For example, it could well be that the Chinese have a working vaccine but for plitical reasons we don't want to use it, that would be unacceptable.

The information is all out there for those looking yes. However it’s how the mainstream media have been framing the ‘headlines’ and the story that is the issue.
Thousands of people only see or hear the story from their newspaper, television or radio news bulletins. They don’t look into the information that’s out there if you dig for it.They don’t see all the different sources linked on this thread.
That’s why people like my mum have picked up the negative spin, mainly just listening to radio 2 and Jeremy Vine every day put out recently and panicked. The mainstream media have a responsibility to be aware of that and their resposibilities.

Would you prefer people to carry on thinking they're fully immune?

We have the full picture wrt the AZ vaccine, how that is conveyed is clearly preference. We clearly think differently, that's all.

Maybe your Mum is right. Not everything in the world is a garden of roses. The topic is virus vs humans not Government public health policy and their poll ratings.

Good, I’m fully aware too. I wasn’t talking about myself though I was talking about other people like my mum, and by association that would include her friends she’d been talking to, all in their late 70s and oearly 80s. They weren’t and need to be.

So that's a no to both questions then.

Or is your answer and easy acceptance of such headlines at least partly based on your anti vaccine stance in so far as you are not going to take it when offered first time as you don't trust it?

She wasn’t right. She thought the vaccine she’d had that was giving her hope was now obsolete and she and everyone would be locked away for another year while a new one was developed and that my not work if it mutates again.
It isn’t good people in their later years living alone fearing they might spend them locked away not being able to travel to see their grandchildren grow up, get married, graduate from university. Just because they listen to radio 2 all day or get the Daily Mail for their news.

Before all this vaccine talk blew up India was interesting as they seem to have hot herd immunity in their cities without ever having a lot of death. Clearly different regions and populations experience this differently. An age effect or past exposure to coronaviruses or something else?
 
Anyone else agree it's a fucking disgrace that we are still in lockdown ?

Let's ruin peoples businesses, stop people getting cancer treatment, watch people suicide rates keep rising all in the name of a virus with a 99.5% survival rate.

Disgusting.
