This data is looking really hopeful.

Though this is Pfizer only so we need to see how the two different vaccines fare in the UK.

Happily the data out last night posted earlier on infectivity suggests as hoped that AZ is also very good at lowering seriousness and infectivity of others which is far and away more important to controlling an outbreak than stopping everyone catching Covid as I think that will never be possible.

We manage this disease by living with it in the way we do other illnesses - stopping them overwhelming health authorities and regularly protecting the most vulnerable and using measures of all kinds to minimise infectivity.

This pandemic will end when catching Covid is like getting flu and only makes a very few sick enough almost by accident that the story is mentioned.

It will be a peace treaty not a victory for either side.

My wife getting her first jab today at 12 30. Only 26 but she has underlying health issues ironically getting it before my 60 year old mum who has had to shield! Guess it’s to do with the area as where my mum lives there is a lot of older people

I think the suggestions coming out from government today of vaccinating everyone down to 40 by April is an indication of the way out of lockdown. We need to reduce transmission from those who catch covid but rarely get very sick as these are where 90% of the cases will be coming from. Stop that transmission you get the world back to normal.

They are the next priority as stopping people from dying was obviously the first. But now we are into the next phase of the battle and that is why priorities will start to change on who gets vaccinated.

That makes sense to me. I thought the same about the Excel in London - anyone without a car has to travel on public transport which the advice is not to use.

How can you volunteer to drive the elderly they may live on their own and don’t want to use public transport, ive had my 1st vaccination so would gladly help out taking them to be vaccinated

The ultra-high levels of takeup we're seeing (see above from ONS) of 95%+ in the over 70s massively reduces the risks of removing restrictions, because even if there is a further surge in infections, say in Autumn, then the likelihood of that knocking on to significant hospitalisations and deaths is much, much lower.

Our vaccine uptake is an incredibly good news story.

Yes some on here are indeed. Or politically opposed I guess.

I really do not like the way people personalise these attacks on those who report Nicola Sturgeon's data.

As in me mostly so I take this attack personally.

I have repeatedly said I do so not because of politics or nationalism etc. As I have zero involvement in Scottish nationalism and my political views are actually very fluid. I have voted for three different parties in the last three elections as I base my decision on policies not prejudice.

Yes - I suspect it is relevant the fact that she is a woman in a job and most of you are blokes so might not see why that would tip the scales a bit for me in giving leeway. I have been in meetings like Jackie Weaver too often to know how that tips the balance towards the men there when they never even notice it happening.

But if so any tilting of my opinion in here is subconscious not a real reason for me to be biased.

As I have repeatedly said in here the reason I report her is that she gives data in her daily presentations and that should hardly surprise anyone as to why I tune in.

As for the data. I report what she says good or bad and don't judge as this is not a politics thread.

But I also do not hide anomalies and recall posting (though nobody in here picked up on it) when she described numbers that added up to over 100% of people vaccinated in certain groups that she referenced to it being because the population data was out of date.

Seems odd that any government plans the most important vaccination programme in British history off the back of data they know to be incomplete.

So I will continue to report the data she posts and if some in here want to make silly remarks about my doing so and inferring it has any political basis that's up to them. But it will say more about their biases. Not mine.

Well said Heald Place. I am getting a bit fed up of the attacks on Sturgeon on here. I ambivalent to her but she seems in the main to be doing a decent job in difficult circumstances. Professional reporting of what’s going on too. There is a whiff of English nationalism on this thread at times which stinks a bit and should maybe on the political thread instead.

If you've got a bit of spare time I recommend volunteering for volunteer car scheme, normally council run. It's a delight to chat to older folk about life and lives and feel you're doing some good. In Cambridge half the folk I transported (hospital, GP, shops etc) were from Lancashire ! They cover your motor costs as well.

The Scottish deputy minister says they are very encouraged by the fall in death in care homes since most there have been vaccinated.

Adds that all those over 70, all care home residents and all health care staff have had the opportunity to have a vaccination and the take up is close to 100% in most instances. And all those who did not take it up but want to come forward should do so and they will be vaccinated ASAP.

Also that 74% of those aged 65 - 69 have now been vaccinated.

Start giving short notice second doses to people that have used the venue if it stops vaccine waste or let people join a short notice online queue. Surely there would be a big uptake.

It would make sense of the data but its too early to be very sure the deaths are falling because of the vaccine more than say they are because we reduced cases rapidly a month ago by about 50% in 10 days.

We are probably still only in the very early phases of seeing the vaccine impact and IF that is really working the next 2/3 weeks should see very obvious drops in the over 80s deaths and some in the 60 - 79 age range too.

Problem is as numbers of deaths are falling fast the data is harder to interpret on very broad age ranges and low numbers as one or two cases make big differences. And, of course, those people due more anyway with or without covid and it is easy to skew data by assuming they died because of covid not with it.

The hospitalisation data is the real key.

That very clearly is dropping fast.

Scotland week to week down 250 from 1472 to 1222 in past 7 days. Just over 17% fall in a week.

Previous week it fell from 1794 to 1472 - which is 322 and just under18% fall in a week. Almost exactly the same in both weeks.



England week to week (to last night's data) down 4350 from 19. 983 to 15, 633 in past 7 days. 22% fall in a week.

Previous week it fell from 25, 334 to 19 983 - which is 5351 - 21% - so a very stable two week drop.

If this continues it is all that really matters and we can assess causes when the data allows.
