Am I right in thinking the US has still to approve the Oxford vaccine? If they approve it the EU will have no excuses, they are simply trying to damage its reputation imo.

I'd say the actions and statements from many European countries have made the AZ vaccine almost 'unsellable' to their respective populations. If the millions of administered doses in the UK combined with all the data we now have isn't enough then I'd say it isn't going to be a viable option for many countries.

That's a shame but I can't see the UK perception changing now as more or less everyone will have a relative or friend who has had it.
I agree, crazy situation.

The damage caused by these countries stopping their vaccination programmes could be huge. Sure if tens of thousands of people were dropping dead from blood clots then absolutely stop the vaccinations but to halt them over a few isolated cases which we don't even know are even related to the vaccine is ridiculous.

And sadly the damage is done now. Even if they do their investigations and find the vaccine is safe it's too late now as it's reputation has been damaged and with the internet full of anti-vax bollocks to start with people are just going to refuse to have the vaccine. Which of course will lead to the virus spreading more and maybe even more variants developing.
We need to tighten our borders even more, imo.

5089 cases

64 all settings deaths

Tests are WAY down over the weekend as predicted due to the no school testing issue.

Today's 5089 comes from 950, 753 (over half a million down on Friday)

Yesterday's 4618 cases was from just 423, 507.

So just 471 extra cases today from 527, 246 more tests!

And yesterdays 4618 versus Fridays 6609 was from more than an amazing one MILLION fewer tests!

Halting the vaccince for political reasons is madness.

I've said this before several times, but I'll say it again.

There is no reason to think there is anything political about the thrombosis suspensions in some countries.

This is a regulatory position taken by agencies in individual countries.

This is a normal part of regulatory agencies responses to these kind of issues. Different agencies take a different view of risks. Whether you think it's right or not.

...at least 2021 is starting to grow into something just as weird as 2020.
Crazy. Was once going to give up drinking for good (not that I drink much these days anyway) but I feel alcohol will normalise this strange landscape - bring on the openings.

More importantly....open the bleeding hairdressers. I'm having to wear hats in zoom calls now. I look like a post meltdown Syd Barrett ffs.

Clearly if there are similar levels of blood clots in those who have had the Pfizer vaccine then i put it to you that the halt on the AZ vaccine roll out isnt based on science. What do you attribute it to?

Todays UK cases are up 377 wk to wk on last Monday with 158, 000 more pillar 1 & 2 tests yesterday than last Sunday for that lower number.

So the positivity number week to week will have fallen - not risen - as the media will doubtless not realise.

I don't get this though.

'Germany's health ministry announced on Monday that it would stop administering the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine with immediate effect, on the recommendation of the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), the country's authority on vaccines.

"After new reports of thromboses of the cerebral veins in connection with the vaccination in Germany and Europe, the PEI considers further investigations to be necessary," the ministry said, quoted by AFP news agency.

What connection? It's been stated several times by experts that there is no connection or sign of it in the results so far, i.e there's no higher rate of blood clots in people who have had the vaccine.

I find it bizarre myself, it's like countries are just following the others who have suspended it.

Vaccination numbers yesterday

First doses: 257,010

Second doses: 25,371

Pretty good for a Sunday. I'm eagerly awaiting today's figures tomorrow :)

Astrazeneca need to provide a better explanation for these blood clots issues because it is already putting considerable doubts in people's minds. Correlation doesn't equal causation as they say but just a blanket statement "it isn't us" isn't re-assuring people.
To put it in perspective, 40 cases out of 17,000,000, is 1 in every 425,000 people.

You might as well check everyone that had roast beef last weekend, and see how many have had a blood clot since, probably be a lot more than 1 in every 425,000.

Regulatory agencies following up reports of adverse events.

The numbers reported are presumably prior to these latest events.

I don't have any concerns personally, and had the AZ jab on Friday. But I think it's entirely right that if the Austrian agency suddenly gets a number of reports then they follow it up. It's exactly what I'd expect. And I don't see any evidence whatever of political interference in the process.

In the UK, the MHRA has much more experience of the vaccine than anyone in the EU (probably 20 fold more at the moment) so it's not surprising they've taken a less risk averse stance.

Politicians in the UK have been jumping on this bandwagon. They, and any on the continent who may be doing likewise should STFU and wait for the outcome. Apparently EMA are promising that tomorrow, which is very good news if true.

But presumably that doesn't take into account the recently reported cases.

Again I don't see any cause for concern personally. But this doesn't seem politically motivated, just very risk averse. Regulatory agencies can be like that, and sometime we thank them for it.
