Coronavirus (2021) thread

Just to be clear, I agree that the elderly, vulnerable and those who care for both should be at the top of any list to be vaccinated. But (to my knowledge) they've all already been offered the vaccine. At the point when we're vaccinating the healthy, low-risk population I think it makes more sense to drive vaccinations towards people who have high(er)-risk lifestyles (e.g. students, factory workers, high-density households) where the virus will spread more easily.

I cohabit with my fiance in a 3-bed semi with a nice big garden and plenty of room, we both work from home in non-essential industries. It wouldn't make sense for me to be vaccinated before a student living in a hall with 20 other people sharing a kitchen.

And they're already running amok IMO. I don't know a single person aged between 18-25 who's actually adhering to any of the rules. Withholding the vaccine as a preventative to running amok simply hasn't worked.
Fundamentally we agree, but there is the possibility they run more amok than they have done.

I think you can make subtle arguments for doing things differently, but you can't condemn the way it was done.

I'm fortunate, I've had both doses via work and was probably one of the first in the country to get to that stage so easy for me to say!

Thank God that Oxford were steered towards AZ. The EU would have had us totally over a barrel and in-hoc to a German pharma company if they hadn't.
There’s been a number of own goals in mainland Europe, just like we scored a few ourselves during the first couple of waves. The Germans fooked up by having a laissez faire approach to who BioNtech partnered with. This has (reportedly) been a factor contributing to supply problems in the EU.

I think the lack of support for Northern Italy during the first weeks / months of the pandemic (in Europe) has been the EU’s biggest failing to date. That’s just my opinion of course:

I think the supply will come on stream soon but all the talk about up-front manufacturing at risk was a load of nonsense and not enough national preparation for vaccine production has been done.

Ideologically the West doesn't buy into state intervention so they left it to private companies, and of course, they did nothing. So after the vaccines were authorised there was little infrastructure in place despite the whole world waiting desperately for months for vaccine.
That was the purpose of the Vaccine manufacturing plant that the UK are building in Oxford. To provide pandemic manufacturing facilities for pharma companies that can be used during a pandemic. Great idea in 2018 but sadly it won't be up and running till November 2021 even though delivery has been brought forward two years.

No I think you're right For example, Alpine ski resorts should have been locked down in mid Feb and skiers quarantined. That was the biggest spread event in Europe by far.

There are apparenlty 2 Catapult sites being built. both capable of producing 140m doses a year. thats a nice level of turn over.

the other is being built in Essex.

Yep it seems it's absolutely rife, and even people actually being happy that they have bent the rules!!
I will really be very angry if these twats get to go abroad and do stuff before the ones who have to wait to get done - the age range that who arguably have worked through the most over the past year.
I am really fucking angry about this issue, it's disgraceful.

UK £37Billion, privatised track and trace shown to be a waste of money in the main. Part of the problem has been people unwilling or unable to self isolate as discussed previously on here.
We took advice from Taiwan but refused to have a quarantine app for folks with phones or to have tagging for those that didn't. A case where the right to be a dick trumped peoples right to life - which should not have happened during a pandemic.

Unable maybe partially due to loss of wages etc whereas unwilling is due to selfishness or is it the other way around. Just look at the scenes last couple of days from Platt Fields and Castlefields last night. Unbelievable the actions of these people. Just what is going on in their heads. Probably nothing and that’s the problem. Should water cannon the lot using an ink that stay on skin for four weeks then everyone will know what twats we have to share oxygen with. Bit radical I know but I reckon it might make people think twice.
And my vote.

Wales vaccination update:

1, 443, 885 first doses given - 16, 702 today - was 13, 473 yesterday & 17, 214 last week

449, 538 second doses - 11, 601 today - was 13, 921 yesterday & 11, 992 last week

I'm not sure on that, everything should be pretty much open now given the figures and groups 1-9 being vaccinated, certainly pretty much the whole UK would have been tier 1 now under the old tier system.

Just the Gov and their advisers want 5 weeks between measures so they can test their impacts, which is why they are refusing to bring dates in.

Young people have given up a hell of a lot to protect against something that for them at a personal level isn't really an issue, personally I'm fine with them going out filling a park seeing their mates etc.

Just on the queue jumping, there are quite a few areas that over the last three weeks have been opening up the availability to book on for any age group as they’ve had excess supply and slots available. It hasn’t been publicised much though and they’ve been releasing them in batches throughout the day.

Personally, I could have had the vaccine very early on or at any time since due to the company I work for, but I’m more happy to wait for it to be my turn (which won’t be too long anyway).

I agree but take your crap home with you, tramp bastards

Zoe App prediction today falls below 4000 to 3805 AND for the first time North West is rated the LEAST infected area. Though there have been big falls in most areas and instead of just South East and North West now in the sub 100 'white zone' so are everyone else apart from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and in England London and the Midlands.

At a range of 14 - 80 per million the NW tops them all today.

And the number of symptomatic ongoing cases has fallen again as it has now every day since January. Today down to just 64, 574 from 66, 666 last time I looked 48 hours ago.

Not that it will actually happen, of course, but falling at that rate we would be two months away from zero symptomatic covid cases in the UK.

Scotland vaccination update:

2, 493, 327 first doses given - 30, 258 today - was 26, 671 yesterday & 36,099 last week

399, 062 second doses given - 44, 306 today - was 16, 313 yesterday & 13, 984 last week

That looks like a record number in Scotland today.
