If what we are doing is clearly working, why rush now. Take it steady and less risk of needing a backward step. An extra few weeks after 14 months of this isn’t too much extra hardship. I know the closer we get to normality the bigger the temptation to rush and take short cuts, but better to be gradual.

As someone who has always been of the opinion we have been over cautious, I agree with this. I think the 5 weeks between the next 2 stages of lockdown are right and gives everyone a chance to get the shops and initial rush to the pub out of their system before the next big opening. No point in rushing these hopefully final steps.

Regional Cases Today

Also v 7 days ago

SOUTH

East down 62 to 146 v 148

London UP 67 to 341 v 317

South East down 19 to 213 v 222

South West down 87 to 117 v 94

MIDLANDS

East down 14 to 197 v 245

West down 1 to 166 v 256

NORTH

North East down 58 to 59 v 139

Yorkshire UP 90 to 493 v 408

And, NORTH WEST down 39 to 276 v 388

Midlands and the North falling week to week - other than Yorkshire which returns to the top spot again. London has climbed back jut above North West which - for now - is doing very well as a region.

Having to book a doctor’s appointment as for weeks I’ve had loose bowels (too much information I know!). That’s nothing new for me but it’s definitely gone up a notch and hasn’t gone away. I’m hoping it’s just a symptom of long Covid having had the virus at the back end of January and diarrhoea is listed as one of the long Covid symptoms but going to get things checked out just in case.

Greater Manchester Cases

175 cases today - up 4 on yesterday. But down 17 on last week. As the NW fell today by 39 this was not so good for GM as a whole but small numbers. small margins.

The GM scoreboard has a far more familiar feel from the past week or two.

BUT CHECKOUT TAMESIDE BELOW!!!

Manchester top scores on 47 which is up 9 on day but down 8 wk to wk

Rochdale on 24 - up big (15) day to day and 2 wk to wk

Bolton sticks at 23 from yesterday up just 1 on last week.

Oldham is down 2 to 21 which though a tad high is a fall of 12 on last week.

Wigan next on 19 which is also down 6 on the day and by 4 from last week

Trafford lost a little ground today on 12 - up 5 on the day and 2 on last week. Also lost 4 overall Popscore Points to Stockport who had a better day.

Salford also on 12 - same as yesterday - but up 4 wk to wk.

The other 3 have single figures:-

Bury on 8 - down 4 day to day but up 1 week to week

Stockport is also on 8 - which is down 1 on the day but down 10 from last week

Tameside - though - steals the headlines!

Taking us as close to zero as you can go without getting there with just 1 case today.

This is down 12 on the day and 8 week to week.

It is also the lowest GM score since mid Summer 2020.

Weekly cases:-

Bury 34, Tameside 36, Trafford 46, Stockport 56, Salford 72, Rochdale 93, Wigan 98, Bolton 99, Oldham 113, Manchester 219

Have you tried to avoid milk products to see if it helps? Not just milk in it's bottled form. I had diarrhoea (not covid related) a few years ago. After that, I lost a lot of weight. Didn't seem to go away. Turned out the diarrhoea led to me becoming lactose intolerant. Weirdly, butter was a big issue even though milk content was fairly low.

If you are getting a lot of wind, try charcoal tablets (with plenty of water) and camomile tea (even though it is disgusting).

I do hope your doc has thin fingers. The person I went to see had the fattest fingers I had ever seen. Bit uncomfortable, to say the least.

Do you know anything about DNA based developments like the Scancell Covidity vaccine? I’ve read about it online but it’s a bit complicated for me. Seems they can address variants by acting against a different part of the virion that doesn’t mutate. Do you know if there there are other companies doing similar research and who’s in the lead at the moment? I’m interested from an investment perspective.
Moderna, Pfizer and Curevac. mRNA platform is regarded as the future of this sector. But their share price may already factor in expectations of success.

HOSPITAL DATA

Good falls in both England and the other UK regions. Just 322 in hospital outside England - down from 4912 in January! UK now just under 2300 patients in hospital with Covid when it was nearly 40,000 in January. Ventilators sub 400 in both England and UK. With dates when numbers were lower slipping back now daily into late September.

South West's rise in ventilators for 7 days is slightly worrying but the numbers are so low not a panic.

Things still going in the right direction pretty much everywhere else.

UK total:

Patients down to 2294 - it was 39, 248 at the peak on 18 Jan - (fall of 36, 954 in 86 days) :- lowest since 27 September

Ventilators down to 352 it was 4077 at the peak on 24 Jan - (fall of 3725 in 80 days) : lowest since 1 October

England only:-

ADMISSIONS
:-

173 Covid admissions (12 April) following 175, 151, 167, 167, 189, 183, 188 in the week before.

PATIENTS:-

Patients down today by 85 to 1972 v 2486 last week :- lowest since 29 September

Peak was 34, 336 on 18 Jan (fall 32, 364 in 86 days)

Ventilators: down 18 to 315 v 393 last week :- lowest since 4 October

Peak was 3736 on 24 Jan (fall 3421 in 80 days)

Regions:

Patient // Ventilators // change in past day to today and v last week

East down 7 to 181 v 200 // down 2 to 20 v 28

London down 8 to 513 v 577 // down 4 to 106 v 121

Midlands down 36 to 364 v 502 // down 5 to 64 v 79

NE & Yorks down 18 to 348 v 454 // down 2 to 52 v 70

North West down 15 to 358 v 457 // down 3 to 46 v 61

South East down 6 to 138 v 210// down 4 to 13 v 27

South West stays at 70 v 86 // UP 2 to 14 v 7 (THIS RISE IS A LITTLE ODD BUT HAS GONE ON A WEEK NOW)

GM Weekly Pop Data after today:~

Borough / Pop Today / 7 days ago / up or down wk to wk/ Testing is % of local population who have tested positive for Covid over past year.

As ever with Pop going up is bad, going down good - the higher the number the better or worse depending on direction moving. The Pop is total cases in past week versus 100,000 POPulation to even out the comparison versus size and expected cases based on numbers living there.

Oldham 48 / 66 Down 18 Testing positive 9.7%

Rochdale 42 / 67 / Down 25 Testing positive 9.5%

Manchester 39 / 64 / Down 25 Testing positive 9.5%

Bolton 34 / 60 / Down 26 Testing positive 9.0%

Wigan 30 / 49 / Down 19 Testing positive 8.8%

Salford 28 / 36 / Down 8 Testing positive 8.9%

Trafford 20 / 38 / Down 18 Testing positive 6.9%

Stockport 19 / 51 / Down 32 Testing positive 7.1%

Bury 18 / 46 / Down 28 Testing positive 9.0%

Tameside 16 / 60 / Down 44 Testing positive 8.1%

Three boroughs - Bury, Stockport and Tameside with a weekly Pop under 20 is unprecedented in GM. With Trafford only just out on 20 even more so.

Tameside's amazing score of just ONE case today claims the current best Pop in GM title too. But it is a genuine battle now as is the lowest case score in GM. Several boroughs very close.

The case drop readjustment is looming in 2 days though so it may not last long! Though impact will not be great as falls carried on after that day last week mitigating any real problem when the comparator is a minus number. It will be a one day jump upward hopefully.

Oldham and Rochdale - the two who drove the wave in the past but levelled right off are back having issues (the number of times I mention Pennine Acute hospital having x deaths in the England hospital data is a legacy of them being relatively still an issue with cases).

Be interesting to know if there is high non acceptance of vaccination in these communities. It seems a possibility based on demographics.

Pennine Acute is actually 4 hospitals, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and North Manchester (Crumpsall)

Indeed and with Bury doing so differently it does suggest demographic differences might be a factor.

Though the numbers are only high relative to the rest of GM and in truth are not really worth anyone worrying over.

India reported a record 200,000 new cases, as many hospitals treating coronavirus patients reported severe shortages of beds and oxygen supplies.

The surge was the seventh record daily increase in the last eight days and comes as the country battles a massive second wave of infections that has its epicentre in the state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai - which has entered lockdown.

India reported 200,739 new cases over the last 24 hours, according to official data released today.

Cheers. We have lactose free milk at home - more for the other half's sake - but at work it's normal milk. Like I said, the issue has clearly gone up a notch in the past couple of months so it could be Long Covid related as the timeline would fit, but I've got a telephone appointment with the doctor this morning and hopefully we can rule out the most ominous cause first and take it from there.
