Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

If that story is true the police need to investigate as they would any other breach of lockdown rules and whoever was responsible needs to be dealt with severely. If the breach was sanctioned at a high level in the football authorities or at the club then heads should roll. Unfortunately the whole Dominic Cummings farce has reduced public confidence in both the enforcement of the rules and the integrity of people in positions of authority in respect of the virus.

This is why you shouldn't just go off on one without reading the story.

Ornstein reported that the 1 player tested +ve, he and 2 who were classed as being close to him were separated from everyone else and quarantined for 3 days, and then returned -ve antibody and antigen tests.

The player who gave the positive test result was tested on saturday, sunday and monday before the City match and all test results were negative.

That allows them to leave quarantine as per the government guidelines.

Given the fact that everyone tested -ve a few days earlier, and everyone tested multiple times -ve before the City game, it's likely it was a false positive.

La Liga working on a protocol to reopen their stadiums this season although it sounds like it will be limited. In France, stadiums will re-open to fans in France from 11 July, with up to 5,000 fans allowed inside to watch live sports.

David Ornstein in The Athletic today says an Arsenal player tested positive the week before they played us (and was in close contact with two others), but was cleared to play anyway.

I think that's a pretty misleading comment Ric, and has kicked up a lot of indignant comments from people who didn't read the article.

1 player tested positive on Friday 12th. He and 2 players who'd spent >15 minutes in close proximity were isolated.

The player tested negative for both antibodies and antigen on Saturday and Sunday through private tests.

Then all 3 tested negative on Monday 15th on the PL official tests and were allowed back on Tuesday.

Note to self. Before rushing to react to a posting by this Ric person (!), check the article reported to find out that there's in fact nothing to it. The players were removed from training whilst re-test results were awaited and those tests were negative so the three could return to training.

Sorry, I haven't had chance to read the article in full yet. Was just going off The Athletic's own tweet, which may have been somewhat clickbaity:

Agreed. To be fair whilst I know that fake news is a thing I thought the source of the story was reliable. Who is this Ric fellow anyway?

Just watched Sky News, a report from Germany their R Rate has just gone up from about 1.9 to 2.7. There has been reports that one meat factory in Dortmund has 1,300 reported cases of the Covid19 virus.

So cleavers me saying yesterday that one player could play apart in passing it on to 300 others wasn't so far off the mark. This is why this season should have been declared null and void.

The German R rates has rocketed to 2.88 do they get that number from testing and getting a positive outcome? I presume so? If the uk tested more Im sure our R rating would be well higher than they are saying.

If the second bullet point above is true as printed and not just click bait it shows that Real have no interest in the integrity of the competition that they have won so many times.

R0 is a ratio; a comparison of new cases to active cases, so if you have a very low number of active cases any local outbreak will have a large affect on R0. It doesn't mean Germany is in the midst of a growing epidemic it means they've reduced their known cases to such a low level that local outbreaks move their national data.

The outbreaks in meat processing plants (UK, US, Germany) demonstrate where the risk lies. Closed unventilated factories where people are in closed environments for long periods of time are the type of environments to be avoided if at all possible but for many this is not an option. That's where our concern should be, not with pampered millionaires.
