Those who are on full pay - and guaranteed to keep their job regardless of circumstances -are far from being the worst casualties of this situation.

This is very true and I'm very very lucky. I was in a bit of a flap earlier - being stuck in a single room does funny things to your brain and mood. I feel tearful tonight - and believe me I don't do feeling sorry for myself tearful - and I'm only on day 4!!!!! This is going to be very tough for everyone - especially those who have many more worries than me

This video from inside an Italian hospital might upset you but we need to see it.

There were signs that the number of new cases in Italy were stabilising but they increased today. Their measures are having some effect. We need more encouragement for the health workers.

Surely it must begin to moderate soon. If you look at China curve and the date when Wuhan went into lockdown, the number of new cases starts to fall after about ten days. That was one City though. In Italy we have different regions all at different stages in the epidemic.

People in the UK need to see this to prepare for what we will see here. We need to see Italy recover somewhat so that we know that when it hits here in its full force that the period of suffering will be brief.

Send that video to everyone who says this virus is nothing, or just a cold.

Not even remotely as bad, I can't remember shutdowns of people losing their jobs rent and mortgage amnesties. I say this as someone who had swine flu and nearly lost someone close who had it, it was touch and go.

We’re already a significant way there in terms of deaths. This thing is obviously far more deadly and contagious but I just wondered whether the adults in the room were worried at the time.

I didn’t realise it was ultimately beaten by a vaccine.

The symptoms are far worse with COVID-19 it seems too.

I was 16 when Swine Flu hit and my brother had it and was relatively okay. I was like most self centred lads at 16, only interested in football and girls. I wasn’t into politics or current affairs at all.

With that in mind, can someone who was mature at the time of Swine Flu or SARS tell me if the panic was anywhere near as bad?

I know we didn’t impose serious measures so it’s obviously not but what was the worry like and did it all just go away quickly?

Any kind of flu virus will kick your arse. I had seasonal flu in the mid-90's and it pretty much floored me for a week. I have never felt so ill in my life. It took me about a month to get back to normal. If you have a weakened immune system or underlying medical condition, then you should be very afraid.

There was a vaccine for Swine Flue (H1N1) within around 6 months. With COVID-19, a vaccine is at least 12-18 months away.

Could be the case at times. I am not sure if it is with @Indaparkside — he would have to say. But it is something I can pass on to Ric to see if it makes sense.

It is difficult, as I do try to do most of my moderation via engagement rather than formal action, so I don’t want to lose that route with a special heading that makes one of my posts seem more serious than it actually usually is, if that makes any sense.

And thanks, mate — I’ll assume “special” is a good thing (though Inda and a few others would likely disagree). ;-)

I’ll defend you here by saying the one time you felt obliged to intervene on a transgression of mine, you took the trouble to head it off by PM.

I go round gp surgeries taking blood. There is no set rules of how they are dealing with this. Some surgeries are doing telephone consultations only. Others are working as normal. Some surgeries are providing me with mask, gloves and an apron, others are not. The government are going on about social distancing, this is clearly not possible for me when taking blood. When no mask is available I do feel particularly vulnerable. The surgeries clearly need some guidance of what they should be doing. Public Health England should be leading on this. I think all the attention ha been on the hospitals and how to protect and ready them for the storm. Primary care has got lost In all this. Terrible situation that is only going to get worse
The governments inaction will have a lot to answer for in the future allowing this situation to develop
