Basket price this week, (vs average for the same basket so far this year.)

Asda
£80.71 (£66.68)

Morrisons
£89.57 (£70.97)

Sainsbury's
£89.44 (£70.79)

Tesco
£94.00 (£71.39)

Waitrose
£108.44 (£79.83)

Anyone doing a shop like this is paying more than £20 over the odds, wherever you go. There's been no attempt to protect consumers at a critical time.

That is appalling.

Thanks for that, it looks about right comparing the cost today with my last shop there, about 15% more than expected.

I get what your saying, but even with a stricter lockdown, I’m not sure it would have made a huge difference. It might have slowed down infections, but deaths would have been unavoidable.

of course I’m not a scientist though so I don’t really know. Just basing it on Italy and Spain who have very strict measures in place

An earlier lockdown was the best bet. Slowing down infections slows down deaths and, importantly, it buys time for better prep.

Scotland had its highest winter deaths for 18 years - this had been around a lot longer than a few weeks i am sure. The death rate will continue to rise for two more weeks.

Well if this is socialism, then sign me up. This is impacting human society across the globe. Only essential businesses need to be kept funded and afloat.

Otherwise, households needs to be sustained with a universal amount until a vaccine is developed. My mortgage company just kicked the can down the street for three months when the payment holiday ends.

What then? Same goes for all these other initiatives. Three months pay, three months for this, three months for that.

I'm certainly no economist but why go £1trillion in the hole, if households in this country could get it instead and spend the money to essentially live, thus paying that cash directly back into the very economy it needs to keep afloat?

It's not as if people can go out and spend it on a holiday is it?
You do yourself down. Your grasp of economics seems sound. The alternative is to give it to banks, insurance companies, oil companies etc. Give it us and local food shops, and therefore suppliers and farmers, would all benefit now. Then when we can leave the house,,bars, restaurants, other types of shops will all benefit from our expenditure.
The likes of Barclays, Branson et al can survive longer than we can.

These types of crisis allow us to recalibrate. After WW2 despite all the destruction a better world was built for the majority who'd previously been left out of the country's wealth. In 2008 a different model was pursued.

Interesting report in the Times about risk assessment.
The scientific body responsible met on Jan 13 and concluded that the risk to UK was "very low."
Jan 21 risk raised from very low to "low".
Feb 21 risk raised to "moderate".
No info on when it was raised to "high"
Jan 13 minutes include
"The probability that a cluster of cases [of respiratory infections] in the UK.......is due to COVID 19 remains very low"
Hmmm....

Did you miss the gist of this? The context was anyone in a residential nursing home. And that was what was apparently said by a local MP this morning.
No I didnt miss the gist, and the key word in that for me is 'allegedly' as I havent seen it and as far as I can see only one poster here did. With respect to all, I would like to see for myself exactly what that MP said

True, initially but they let it get out of hand by trying to cover it up.

We are very much culpable for what’s happening in Europe and the US.

I think whilst it’s over there or only over here in small numbers, it’s difficult to go for a lockdown. As silly as that sounds now, the public wouldn’t be on board and it’s unclear if it will spread to such large numbers.

We’re paying the price for gambling on the above.

563 deaths in fucking depressing.

Not unexpected though given the way this country has been slow to act. It will be 500-900 a day for the next week or so now. We were all risked at Wembley only a month ago and the six nations was only Stopped 3 weeks ago. They acted too late unfortunately. Hopefully these measures will slow it down a bit in 2/3 weeks. Who knows though.

The staff on the frontline of this deserve a medal. It must be tough to see so much suffering and death.
