COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Scottish data

Sadly 1 more death.

267 cases - exactly the same as yesterday but as Nicola Sturgeon reminded - likely days old given how long it is now taking to get results back.

At 3.6% of tests too - and she says there is clear evidence cases are rising given this steadily increasing measure. And we 'absolutely cannot be complacent (or) serious illness and deaths will follow', Likely not at the same level. She agrees. But it is the path we are following and has happened in France and Spain already - she reminds - and we have always been 2 - 3 weeks behind them. So where we will be by October unless we act now.

Cases were 105 Greater Glasgow, 45 Lothian and 40 Lanarkshire.

Under the new measures there are 51 in hospital (up 3) and 6 still in icu ventilator beds.

As you will know from my posts I agree with pretty much all of that assessment and it was indeed very good.

The two upward curves from Mar/Apr and now are very different but that is fairly obviously mostly down to us then testing less and only those already pretty ill and now anyone who has a reason to try to find a test - ranging from wanting to go on holiday or send kids back to school or themselves go back to work. So almost by definition we are testing more who are not very ill and sending fewer into hospital as most testing are just wanting to find out if they have it or not unlike at the start when they got tested because it was very likely that they did.

So we really need to be careful not to over estimate why the two curves are so different

Though I agree there are grounds for optimism on other fronts (better treatment, knowledge of most vulnerable, catching cases early enough to stop them getting critical, shielding of the vulnerable etc) that even without any change in the virus, or greater community immunity levels or lower viral load due to masks or imminent vaccines - deaths are almost certainly not going to climb steeply as before.

But they could if we fail to get testing right. And that is seemingly a big problem right now.

Scotland last week v today:

0 deaths v 1 death

159 cases v 267 cases

1.9% positive tests v 3.6% positive tests

274 in hospital v 51 today. Though that is 3 up from the 48 of yesterday that was 262 on the old measure so if you pro rata that increase it would be about 278. Though this is a guess really as I do not know if it is realistic to just do a % increase in both figures to the same degree. Better going forward week to week to see where yesterdays 48 is next Tuesday. Either way it has gone up by 3 in real terms (or about a 6% rise).

6 icu ventilators v 6 today

Hi tolmie how are the covid issues going for you ? Hopefully you are feeling better and your family safe and well.

I never got my results back so given up the ghost after 14 days in total.

My throat is a feeling a bit better thanks mate.

The 119 hotline for chasing up results now just hangs up after an automated message.

More worried about my teacher wife and kids.

She had 30 kids off sick yesterday with various symptoms and parents being cautious, without any hope of them coming back in or their parents working within the next 14 days due to lack of available tests.

I'm in Trafford and the situation is horrific.

Sorry to hear that. Despite what the politicians are telling us, the situation regarding testing etc is clearly a shambles and very worrying.

Key workers finding it difficult to get access to tests but professional footballers get tested regulary.

What a stupid way to run society and the ecomony.

No surprise that the country failing massively on this is the UK. If you’ve got £250-350 to burn you’re good to go.

Hurray the Telegraph have finally discovered the data about hospital numbers rising to the highest point since July.

Though not the huge % rise in ventilated Covid patients.

It is a start though.

Bolton rate above 200

The figures over the past few days I post on here show it has been smashing records a lot this week.

Glad to see the media have also started to investigate the Tameside problems the figures have been flagging up for some days now.

I know most of you likely do not follow my data heavy posts and that's OK, I know they are formidable and intimidating. But they do often reveal what is happening a few days ahead of other measures and forewarning to act is vital in a pandemic.

So I am just relieved to see that these things are being picked up by the media a little later and just hope there are government number crunchers warning the people that matter of trends before they become obvious enough to reach the papers. Then they can act promptly. I am sure there have to be.

Thanks for this. Interesting stuff, especially the last bit. I've said repeatedly that we should be watching what's happening in the likes of Spain and France and pretty much expecting similar pattern here. Yes, each country will have slightly different measurements and restrictions etc but by in large all very similar so it would make sense that what's happening in these countries will follow here a few weeks later.

If cases are plateuing in Spain, that is undoubtedly good news. But early days yet.

The number of people admitted to hospitals in England with COVID-19 was the highest on Sunday since the beginning of July, figures have revealed.
Latest government data reveals 153 people with coronavirus were admitted on Sunday - the most since 1 July when the figure was 201.

Rolling news so lots of other covid stuff, this is bollocks, why does he keep lying

12:41
PM insists coronavirus tests are up to 240,000 a day

Been pointing that hospital data out for days Kaz, especially as much of it is being driven in the NW - but I am pleased the media have finally woken up to it.

However the ventilator increases are possibly more significant and they all seem to have missed that so far.

Many of us greatly appreciate your efforts mate. Keep up the good work.
