We really have made a complete and utter mess of this. I don't even know why I'm surprised to be honest. Incompetent leadership from the start with the wait and see mentality while everyone else was shutting up shop. Add in the ridiculously idiotic and selfish population we have in this country who just refused to stay indoors and it's no surprise we're first place for deaths in Europe.

And we are now trying to fast track re-opening the country when we should be waiting on the science and getting a vaccination sorted first. So I think we can say thousands more people are going to die needlessly from this.
Been saying it since the beginning, when it was just a bit of flu. The experts/advisors/government have been grossly negligent. It was clear very early on that we were going to be the worst affected in Europe, despite the focus at the time being on Italy. We have inept leadership and the largest percentage of stupid cünts. Not a good combo.

Now there’s a clamour for some normality to resume. What do people not understand about this being the new normal? This is not a 2-month piss about, this is life now. We must wait for a vaccine, people need to accept the long-term nature of this disaster or else there’ll be a damn sight more deaths than there otherwise would have been from now onwards.

Yet our healthcare system has not seen the same stress as Italy which apparently is one of the best in Europe. Strange that.

Italy's excess death figures are far higher than their stated covid deaths so it's far too soon to say we are going to end up the worst affected in Europe.

Would you have been just as surprised if it was a Labour government in charge or a Lib Dem or a more nobler Greener front, now would you ? Fact of the matter is this scenario was an unknown entity from the outset and all the governmental parties could do was to take heed from the experts to hand who quite frankly were not experts as the whole scenario was ? "unknown". Hindsight is a wonderful thing and yes the government initially fooked up but so would have all the other democratic parties and so has all of Europe and so has the Americas and the rest of the known world. Instead of chastisement maybe just maybe this is a time to come together as one single entity in an effort to defeat this behemoth of a virus. Finger pointing is a very easy thing to do in the aftermath.

Applauds. Only you and bill speak sense. Wisdom.

To be fair, someone made the good point that in something like this, it's quantity not quality that matters. Hence why countries with poorer health systems aren't necessarily going to cope less well as long as they have the capacity. And on Italy, it's worth mentioning that their average age is 5 years older than ours, so you would expect more people to die there anyway (although so it Germany, and they've done fine).

This is true, but it's hard to celebrate not ending up as the worst in Europe when you are still the second worst or third. Just 2 or 3 days ago on here, someone said that we're not going to overtake Italy because they usually post massive numbers on the 5th. Well now it's the 5th and we've just overtaken them. Assuming they are a couple of weeks ahead of us, we can expect our numbers to continue to climb at a higher rate than theirs for some time. Of course there's always the risk of a second wave, so we'll have to wait and see. I think it's safe to say however, that the UK haven't dealt with this first wave as well as some other countries.
