Do you *seriously* suggest that national governments would be implementing such incredibly damaging draconian measures (such as in China and northern Italy) were this to all be nothing much more than flu? The pressures to sit back and carry on as normal, hoping for the best, are simply enormous - in terms of jobs, trade, the economy, peoples' way of life, freedom - pretty much everything. And yet draconian measures ARE being taken, because these governments, advised by their scientists, can see the severity of the crisis.

I'm not referring to ChicagoBlue here but it's astonishing how prevalent the view is in our society that this is something and nothing and that it is no more than media fuelled nonsense. People literally mocking others for being worried such is their confidence that they are right that there's nothing to worry about. We seem to have about 50% of the population that when anything important is happening, decide with absolute confidence that they know more than experts like say economic experts or climate scientists or virologists. I can't quite work out why so many are so confident that this is nothing to worry about. Is it because they have decided in their infinite wisdom that it definitely won't spread widely or is it because they realise it will spread widely but have decided that if they get it they will be fine (so in other words, I'm alright Jack so fuck the vulnerable). Either way we've become a very odd society, relatively recently IMO - an appalling mixture of stupidity, over confidence and worst of all utterly unempathetic (unless of course someone is killed at the hands of a Muslim in which case they all suddenly become unbearably mawkish). I would say that it doesn't really matter what these people think but presumably they won't be taking any of the recommended measures that might help at least delay the spread. I fucking hate this country.

if things pan out as it would appear they will mate, 17,000 will look like a drop in the ocean. Without these measures being taken, it would probably be more than 500,000 dead in the UK this year. Do you think that's worth this level of "focus"?

Without changing our ways of life here in the UK, this virus will infect virtually everybody. 40m or 50m people, easily. And the government are *hoping* the death rate may "only" be 1%, not the 3.4% currently being quoted and seen elsewhere. if that doesn't strike you as rather serious, I don't know what does.

It is absolutely what causes the common cold to the flu which constantly mutates itself, hence why we have never found a cure for it and probably never will.

You do realise that this is just as easy to catch as flu and has a fatality rate of 30 to 40x as many people as flu yeah?
