Come on now, getting everywhere open and kids going back to school and autumn viruses kicking in, nearly winter and the well paid head of testing can't see a rise in testing needs ?

She doesn't actually say she "didn't see it coming", if there aren't enough people in the system to do the lab work what can she do ? You keep telling us you've worked in the system, how long does recruitment and training take, I've no idea but it's not a few weeks I'd guess, are the people actually available to recruit ? I assume they need degree's in something relevant.

Not everything is a conspiracy, sometimes shit happens, and in this case demand is outstripping the capacity of the labs.

It's actually because we can do so many tests that we have run out of capacity, we are 5th in the world for number of tests done (ahead of countries with much bigger populations), and 1st in the world of countries with populations >10,000,000 in tests per million population (the only one over 300,000 per million), I'd say that's not a bad job to have overseen.

GM scoreboard:

Bolton 76 - big drop from 130 happily to a better day. 1397 in month (new record). 651 past week. 206 over 2 days (was 211). Pop score up 26 to 1248. Running neck and neck with Preston at 1252 after it had big numbers today.

Bury 36 - up from 35 to another record here. 457 in month. 206 past week, 71 over 2 days (was 65). Pop score up 19 to 1023.

Manchester 102 - down from 115 but to its second worst number. 1408 in month (new record for GM). 551 past week. (Manchester record). 217 over 2 days (was 180). Pop score up 18 to 965.

Oldham 38 - down from 45. 748 in month. 300 past week. 83 over 2 days (was 90). Pop score up 16 to 1457. Blackburn ahead at 1466 now after another bad day there.

Rochdale 29 - down from 48. Like Oldham a hopeful fall. 556 in month. 222 past week. 77 over 2 days (was 81). POp score up 13 but not enough to see it enter the 1200 club at 1207.

Salford 53 - down a little but still second worst ever. University return here seems to be a factor. 660 in month. 281 past week. 113 over 2 days (was 99). Pop score up 20 and easily took it into the 900 club at 909. This has now risen 261 points in the past 30 days. Though only 32 of them in the first 9 days showing how fast this once well under cfontrol city has risen.

Stockport 32 - up from 25 to the worst number yet for here. Its top in GM records are crashing as we speak. Recall it had 1 case (by far lowest in any GM town of late in current restrictions) and that was just 2 weeks ago. I have not seen Elise for a few days to ask but hope she has a plan. 334 in month (new record). 172 past week (new record). 57 over 2 days (was 44) - new record. Pop score up by record 11 to 773. We will soon have no 700 club boroughs in GM it seems as Stockport clings on.

Tameside 22 - down from 41 - much better day here to lowest in 8 days. 602 in month,. 285 past week. 63 over 2 days (was 66). Pop score up 10 to 1065. Good while Since it fared better than Stockport. Hopefully they have tracked and traced the causes.

Trafford 18 - down from 25. As is now the norm best in GM. 343 in month. Not quite enough to catch Stockport for the monthly title in GM but there is always tomorrow. 115 past week. Still no sub 100 GM borough but now well away from the rest holding this record. 43 over 2 days (was 39). Pop score up 8 to 811 so made up 3 on Stockport in chase for this title but still 38 behind so not imminent barring something going very right or very wrong in either place.

Wigan 39 - down from that awful 52 but still second worst ever for town that used to get 0s a month ago. 414 in month (new record). 217 past week. Over 100 behind Trafford so not close to regaining a title it used to hold

Quite a lot of schools in Stockport have had to shut classes down looking at the MEN. Wouldn't be surprised if most of these are school related.

This is the message the government should have been ramming home consistently. Temperature, continuous cough or loss of smell/taste and anything else don’t go for a test.
Problem is, as with many things this government does, hitting the target frequently means missing the point. In an attempt to prove how clever they were just a couple of weeks ago the message was “everyone who wants one can have a test“, and we are now witnessing the aftermath of those statements.

correct the messaging from the govt has been a shambles from day one. Blaming the public for getting tests and overloading the system is the govts fault.

The Comms has been a disaster from the start and still it continues .

I don’t even know what the strategy end game was. I remember when it was about flattening the curve and making sure the nhs isn’t overwhelmed. Now it seems either to

have no deaths from Covid Which is impossible without a vaccine ; or

you have started digging this hole now and there is no way out so keep doing the same things to prove the things you did at the start were right.

Yet another rise in England hospital numbers from 894 yesterday to 953 today. Looks like England will be in 4 figures over next day or so and the UK was below that number not much over a week or so ago.

Though slightly better news England ventilator bed numbers only up from 107 to 108. Though no doubt some of those who died in past 48 hours were on them.

As I posted yesterday it's the messaging that is poor, and it's not being hammered home enough to make people think. I've been at home all day today, with the TV on in the background, there's been one UK government message on, and that wasn't directed at testing, the media are no better, they've not once mentioned the rise in numbers being hospitalised or on ICU, luckily I know, and I know where to look, but 95% of this country won't, so they don't know about it yet, when deaths become a significantly rising number, the media will immediately be "outraged" nothing was done.

yet Trafford is still having lockdown rules . Very good at imposing rules not very good at releasing them.

As I said in my summary before I posted the list it is absurd Trafford (the best by far in past week or so) is restricted and the two who are not have probably had the most worrying rise in past week in GM.

Whilst neither are yet in the danger list UK wide either Trafford needs releasing or (more likely) restrictions are re-imposed on Wigan and Stockport.

I think the restrictions should be county wide for reasons I have noted before. When Wigan and Stockport were clearly well below the rest there was a case for not including them. That has gone now imo.

But Trafford asked to stay in restrictions didn't they? Or am I misremembering?

If a rise in cases scares them then we've had it. We never got it low enough to 're-open' and as such we are trying to retro-fit solutions

On top of that, they feel comfortable saying 'we didn't see it coming' out loud. Makes this even more worrying - a rise in cases/transmition was entirely predictible as soon as they activley encouraged people to go to pubs and resturants and also with kids going back to school

I recall pretty much every lab in the country volunteered to do testing ,the labs and staff were there , the gov rejected lots of them, if they haven't then they need to revisit that , better have all hands to the pump even if they are small labs, contracting out , to the benefit of some in and around gov , has led to the system back log as well as what the public do, most of this is common sense is it not ? They have cut a ton of red tape to get things done so look at all avenues, it is not a conspiracy is incompetence and they blame everyone but take responsibility, as I have said many times, we had a time advantage that we wasted, it is all very frustrating

Thing is we have no idea if they're shutting classes because of covid, or because jonny or sally have a minor cold, 12 months ago there could have been just as many "unwell", and classes would have carried on as normal, it's another unknown amongst many.

they have been paying us to go out and about and socialise and go to pubs and restaurants on RIshi in august and saying what a success it has been

Then come September they are saying everyone is not social distancing , cases are rising and young people have been having too much fun and you all need locking down again.
