COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Two contrasting stories that show the extremes of optimism and pesimism on this subject.

A French scientist says the second wave across the channel is worse and arrived earlier and faster than expected and without drastic action months of serious problems will follow.

Meanwhile in Scotland a 63 year old man who four times had his family called in to say their goodbyes in the hospital icu when on a ventilator has been discharged from hospital after spending a record 172 days (nearly six months) in intensive care with Covid.

Bit like this thread some days but out there in the world beyond BM.
The Scottish man spent 172 on a ventilator but also fist started showing symptoms that weren’t diagnosed as covid when he went to the doctors early February which suggest he contracted it late January from somebody ?

England hospital data is up but not significantly and so maybe just a glimmer of a less rapid uptick.

17 deaths - with 5 from the north west (also 5 from Yorkshire and 4 from the midlands).

It was 12 with 6 from the north west a week ago. So not quite the doubling we had seen all week up to yesterday.

But this is weekend data, of course. As will be tomorrows, so best not to read too much into that.

More details on the England hospital deaths:

26 Sep adds 1 = 1 after one day.

25 Sep adds 11 = 12 after two days.

24 Sep adds 4 = 16 after three days

23 Sep adds 0 = 34 after four days. (Highest four day total since 9July)

22 Sep adds 0 = 24 after five days.(Highest five day total since 9 July).

The only other death was 1 added to 21 Sep taking the total there to 15.

Burnley, Liverpool, Knowsley and Halton in the NW have now overtaken Bolton as major hot spots and above Bolton's cases over past 7 days. When you see what Bolton had in those 7 days from my daily totals you will know they are well up there in numbers. Burnley - where City go in 3 days - is currently the most infected place in Britain.

They should forfeit the game, don't you think? Or be forced to play at the Etihad after tests.

So
Of Scottish infections today

24 in over 65s, including 3 in over 85s

13 in under 15s

113 in 15-19s

194 20-64s

Thats OK - about 7.5%. It has been around this level now consistently for 2 - 3 weeks. Which is perhaps the best news at the moment as it really should help keep deaths from escalating.

It is actually worse in Wales and may explain the disproprtionate death per population. About 25% of the 362 cases are over 60. And the highest testing age group of all is the 50 - 59 year olds.

Wales looks to have a particular problem here. And I fear we will be seeing regular deaths out of proportion to the size of the country just as we did earlier in the pandemic.

This goes to show that the young shouting dont blame us have no arguement

There's several large clusters at university. Of course some will be the outcome of house parties and such like but many of them probably don't deserve blame for the figures.

They are also out at the pubs etc , nobody to blame as such but the numbers dont lie , i also see virtually zero wearing masks out and about and in shops or under their chins , we have all been young and all thought we were indestructable , also the message has been the young dont get ill with it
