According to BBC the number of confirmed cases is 544,000. The actual real number of cases is higher. Let's optimistically put it at 10 times as much....so that's about 5 million, which is about 7% out of a population of 67 million.

If we need 70% infection rate to achieve "herd immunity", that's 10 times as many people. It took 6 months to get to 7%, It could take 10 times as long to get to 70%. That's only another 5 years and then it will all be over.
I think seroprevalence data put the number at around 7% back in June or July cant quite remember when, been a few infected in Sept Oct but still less than 10% if the seroprevalence data is accurate.

1600 students in Newcastle and Northumbria positive this week so clearly the spike in positive tests in the last coupes of weeks is coming from Students and they will be passing it on.

Think recently it was estimated 8% nationally, but some areas like London as high as 17%. Which also means some areas must be less than 8%.

If I've learned nothing else, it is this country could never sustain another long-term war effort to our shores - not that it wouldn't be over in three minutes flat, anyhow!

We have had six months of this and a large part of this septic isle are now looking for any excuse to lighten the load.

Imagine six years of no holidays, no money, kids not seeing their parents for years, people fighting Fascism and not knowing when it might be their turn?

Jesus, what a generation that clearly was...

I can but hope this entire nation will remember all our scientists and NHS staff who are working 24/7 to let some of the more selfish members of our society intersperse their vacuous, narcissistic lives with the ability to get pissed every Friday night and take two weeks every year to have a punch-up in Magaluf.

Thank you to our scientists.

A bit of an unfair comparison though mate as it doesn't really compare like for like scenarios. I think people would get that 'blitz' spirit if there was an actual blitz here, not something that most think is just the flu. It's literally invisible and a lot reckon it isn't real or harmless, and they're being encouraged to go back to work, go to pubs, spend etc, so of course people will react differently to that instead of actual bombs dropping on houses with people exploding in front of them, and an actual worldwide war. Why wouldn't they? The two things are not even remotely comparable psychologically, literally or even metaphorically.

It's pretty much known that the 'Blitz spirit' was nowt more than a bit of doey-eyed nostalgia anyway. That generation were fucking exhausted, beaten down and scraping the barrel too. There was mass tension, depression, selfishness and disillusion. There were people profiteering from it, crime took over and there was nowhere near the levels of unity that people pretended there was. It's quite well documented, and I've heard first hand stories from relatives too how it was just truly awful and a hellish time to get through. Was once told by a great grandparent that no one trusted anyone back then as they were all scared, hungry and desperate.

You're right about the last bit of course re the NHS etc, but as much as I hate the fact that we're surrounded by idiots, I just don't agree there's proportionately more worse people now than then. They're probably just dickheads in a very different way. This country has always been full of selfish knobheads, and no revisionism is needed on that front. It's also worth remembering that there are an awful lot of good people too in this country. Some are tired and cynical, yes, but it doesn't make them bad. It's just a lot harder to not hug your family and stick to the rules when you can't visibly perceive a threat and you're getting considerable mixed messages. Scientists, people you're meant to trust, literally arguing opposing views. Hence the disinterest and split in society. No one can argue about whether a war actually exists or not...we'd be in a different situation altogether if there was a unified stance.

The situation in student halls is shocking.

Gov should force all lectures on line and force Unis to give the students their money back.

Be far more effective than shutting pubs and resteraunts.
It isn’t students that are the ones going to hospital with it though. That’s the issue. The question then is where are those going to hospital catching it. According to contact tracing it’s pubs and mixing in homes.
From what I understand restaurants as such not so much, if it’s just a restaurant, as people sit at one table then go home. The trouble is many pubs are also serving food so how to seperate.Think the Irish closed all ‘wet’ pubs at one point. The other issue people don’t go from restaurant to restaurant like they do with pubs so are easier to trace.

Don't lock anyone up as I've said. People can make their own decisions and risk assessments. Some high risk people don't want this and would target live their lives. You're asking for everything to be shut down as you can't enjoy it, how do you think that's fair? I'm sorry if your situation dictates that it is best that you isolate or whatever, but that won't change regardless of pubs, restaurants etc being open.
My situation does not mean I have to hibernate, but having a free for all as you suggest is lunacy

The whole class is usually treated as a bubble mate, I find that utterly shocking her school have chosen to send home only certain people.

My 13-year-old finished two week self-isolation last week after a girl tested positive on his side of the year.

That was 97 kids sent home.

This week year 13 have had an outbreak. The schools are going down with it every day but it is being suppressed and our teachers being sold down the fucking river.

It's not just the schools, it is grassroots junior football. How can it be that my lad can play competitive district football every Sunday morning, with kids involved from various surrounding schools, scores of parents stood on the sidelines, yet the FA say this is safe? Absolute bollocks.

I hope your granddaughter exhibits no symptoms and will be okay.
Exactly, i thought it was all about the "bubble", i know my daughter has been challenging the school on their policy but feels like she is being fobbed off. She is now happier that she is at home as it has to be safer. Grandaughter isn't showing any symptoms which i'm thankful for, to be fair she is at the stage where she would rather stay in and watch Netflix rather than hang around in a group of kids and appears to be taking the whole thing very seriously. Where she is frustrated is that there are people still in the class that walk to school with the girl who tested positive because they sit at the opposite side of the classroom. How can that be right?

I have been told tonight that more kids have been sent home so maybe it is being taken more seriously.

Also ,unlike in a war, the enemy could be a parent or a child. It’s hard not to break rules when it involves just seeing your family. Can any of us say we haven’t bent or broken some rules and risked infection in the last 6 months. I can’t.
