A bit of an unfair comparison though mate as it doesn't really compare like for like scenarios. I think people would get that 'blitz' spirit if there was an actual blitz here, not something that most think is just the flu. It's literally invisible and a lot reckon it isn't real or harmless, and they're being encouraged to go back to work, go to pubs, spend etc, so of course people will react differently to that instead of actual bombs dropping on houses with people exploding in front of them, and an actual worldwide war. Why wouldn't they? The two things are not even remotely comparable psychologically, literally or even metaphorically.
It's pretty much known that the 'Blitz spirit' was nowt more than a bit of doey-eyed nostalgia anyway. That generation were fucking exhausted, beaten down and scraping the barrel too. There was mass tension, depression, selfishness and disillusion. There were people profiteering from it, crime took over and there was nowhere near the levels of unity that people pretended there was. It's quite well documented, and I've heard first hand stories from relatives too how it was just truly awful and a hellish time to get through. Was once told by a great grandparent that no one trusted anyone back then as they were all scared, hungry and desperate.
You're right about the last bit of course re the NHS etc, but as much as I hate the fact that we're surrounded by idiots, I just don't agree there's proportionately more worse people now than then. They're probably just dickheads in a very different way. This country has always been full of selfish knobheads, and no revisionism is needed on that front. It's also worth remembering that there are an awful lot of good people too in this country. Some are tired and cynical, yes, but it doesn't make them bad. It's just a lot harder to not hug your family and stick to the rules when you can't visibly perceive a threat and you're getting considerable mixed messages. Scientists, people you're meant to trust, literally arguing opposing views. Hence the disinterest and split in society. No one can argue about whether a war actually exists or not...we'd be in a different situation altogether if there was a unified stance.
