COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The places in northern Italy that were locked down 2 weeks ago are not showing new cases. Further south cases are growing.

Seems to me that staying at home, whether ill or not is the answer. If you are infected hopefully after 2 weeks you recover and are not infectious, if you weren't infected at least you've not come into contact with anyone who is.

I honestly am losing faith with the stupid cunts in this world. Quite clearly the most logical thing to do to avoid this illness is to stay at home with your family for a few weeks and don’t interact with anyone else. Don’t know if I’m missing anything, but fucking hell it doesn’t take a fucking genius to work out that’s the best and sensible way.

That’s why they’ll be isolated so they don’t catch it, the rest of us will build the herd mentality and will have to be careful around the elderly.

Maybe putting them in camps for administrative ease or maybe on never ending cruise ships that never dock? Isolation won’t work as a strategy. Herd immunity dictates that they have to die and be replaced by the elderly with immunity. The calculation is more short term deaths but less deaths in the long term. The unknown is a viable vaccine which then protects everyone long term making the cost in the short term too great.

And how much of our strategy is governed by the health care capacity of the State compared to strategy and health care capacity of other States?

You mean when the number of cases peaks, right?
Unless I got it all wrong, that number depends directly on personal contact and doesn't increase autonomously with time. Limiting personal contact would lower/postpone the peak. There wouldn't be that same peak in 4 weeks.

Exactly what I mean. The UK government is predicting that if we lockdown too early then people would begin to ignore the quarantine after a period time and then it’d be ineffective at the time that it’s needed most.

That’s why they’re waiting.

Have you watched the presser?

The vulnerable are being told now to take extra measures compared to the fit and healthy now.

When the lockdown comes, which needs to be at the right time, they will be the first to be ordered to, to protect them.

Reading between the lines China may well have to go through it again once the lockdown finishes and our plan is to try and build up immunity.

They have the best scientists available on this.
As I said to @TheRemainsOfTheDave, I understand the general reasoning behind your post, but there are very real consequences to building heard immunity in this fashion (it is usually a concept applied to the gradual, natural acquisition of immunity to an endemic pathogen by a large population, usually over many years). Those consequences are especially relevant in the context of a potentially overwhelmed healthcare system, which could happen well before the “peak” you have previously described, as people act on their own (external restrictions are not being placed on them) and seek treatment whether or not they have the virus. This is still a *very* risky strategy. And it is not one being adopted by most other nations, nor one being recommended by most reputable health organisations.

One of the reasons they said that loved ones will die is because this strategy all but assures that many of the old and infirm will contract the virus and many of those will die specifically because of complications arising from infection (aka COVID-19).

And I say that as a fairly young person that is unfortunately still in the ‘high risk’ population. There are more of us than many seem to believe and not all are able to as effectively sequester themselves as I am thankfully able. Even then, I do have to make regular visits to hospital, which will increase my chance of infection (further magnified based on this strategy, if also adopted by the US where I live, which in many ways it has been).

That’s because the CDC and WHO vget together in May to decide which strain of the Flu is going to hit the west that coming autumn and winter (funnily enough by tracking outbreaks in China as it always comes from there).

They don’t always get it right as there are so many variants.

Hopefully Covid-19 won’t have so many different strains by the time we can create a viable vaccine.

I don’t see how stopping mass gatherings cannot help? It’s beyond me.

Take away the amount of players and staff that will get it so any competition won’t be viable anyway, but the journey of a fan/spectator leads to the precise breeding grounds I.e close contact, lack of washing facilities etc that they advise against in other areas of life
