10m X 1% = 100k.

10x more deadly (1% mortality Vs 0.1%) and 10m infections, if we can control it. More if we cannot.

I don't know what we'll do just like everyone else doesn't, I didn't expect Italy to lock down 16m people this time last week, but they have. We're probably 2 weeks behind Italy at this stage, so if that is proved I think we will take similar drastic action, If it has to be done to stop it then it will be done imho.

10 times 26000 is 260000. You quoted 100000. Which is just under 4times the number of deaths ie 4 times as deadly as the flu 30yrs ago. Simple maths mate.

Mostly men i believe and average age of 81 like you say. Not that it’s any consolation to them but you’d like to think that we won’t see similar numbers and death rate across the board.

Another interesting thing I read was that 95% of the infections have come from 4 or 5 countries.

I read that the men stat could be linked to smoking rates and the same in China. I may have read that on here though so it might not be true :-)

I think you will find he is actually proffering numbers that are simply not backed up by the statements he quotes. I can except that chippy and yourself are pessimistic many people are and there is nothing wrong with that. But you should not belittle others because they are more optimistic and not as prone to possible panic and scaremongering as yourselves.

Chippy backed up his figures. It’s clear he thinks the government will take measures that means that only 10m or so will catch the virus. He’s explained that.

I am not pessimistic, it serves no purpose for me to be. The markets tanking kills my business so I’ll be sat not earning for a few months with panicking clients. I’m a realist. Chippy, myself, dids et al are quoting real world figures and estimates, not from some twat on a forum, but from experts in the field of virology and infectious diseases from interviews and statements and Q&A’s they’ve given on Covid-19. You’re quoting Trump.

My guess is that we’ll do something similar to Italy which will slow down its spread to an extent that the NHS will just be able to cope. I’m an optimist though and if I’m wrong the NHS could get totally overwhelmed.

Not an expert on the maths of this damn thing but I can’t help thinking China didn’t lock its population down and crater its economy for a month because the Govt were concerned over its people getting a bad case of the sniffles. I mean it’s not even a Govt that gives that much of a shit about its population to begin with.

Flu mortality rate is 0.1% COVID-19 is 10x more deadly, i.e. 1% (we hope).

How deadly something is, and how many actually die are not necessarily in a perfect relationship to other viruses/diseases. It depends on the decisions we take as a nation. COVID-19 has the potential to claim millions of lives the world over, tens of millions. But we all expect nations to take measures to mitigate that, as we’ve seen. So to keep repeating the same point of “your figure doesn’t equal ten times that of flu so you are backtracking” and thinking you’ve won an argument is as ill-informed as it is pathetic. Something can be 100 times deadlier than flu and still claim fewer lives than it with great containment measures. It depends on Boris. His figure doesn’t need to match how many times deadlier the mortality rate is. Ebola’s mortality rate was about 80% in some places, look how many that has killed.

I'd be delighted if somehow only 1m of the 66.4m UK pop catch this. Entirely manageable while admittedly scary and sad if it leads to 50-100k deaths. It does however preclude the societal breakdown we need to ensure the PL trophy remains at the etihad :-(
