I get that and do agree with you. But the playing field is nowhere near the same as in March now. Large gatherings are already banned, most people are working from home, everyone has to wear a mask, awareness is on a different level, no groups of more than 6 etc etc. I don't think we can put any more restrictions in place that are already in without causing a lot more damage than what the virus can.

It's a shite situation and no one wants either option I'm sure.

Have we got any insight into how cooperative the public are being with masks now?

Yes I do, fucking awful. That was when we didn't know anything about the virus and what was going to happen. We now have different treatments available for those who get ill and also know it doesn't kill 3% of those who get it, which was what was touted around when we locked down.

You are totally right about the blame culture. Even on here everyone blames 'the young' without a second thought. It's clear that society is hanging together by a thread and the police encouraging people to shop their neighbours and constant blame is making things worse. Another lockdown will tip things over the edge.

But we can't really be sure of what % it was killing in the beginning either because the testing structure wasn't fully in place yet. A lot of milder cases were going undiagnosed. There's a lag before the hospital cases start creeping and it's too late to stop it if you lock down too late.

I really hate the idea of another lockdown but I don't think Chris Whitty should be accused of overreacting for advising one. He's given lots of advice along the way about steps we'd need to take to avoid a second national lockdown and it's been ignored.

He advised the government that we couldn't open anything else up beyond hospitality if we wanted to reopen schools. The government responded by telling people to go to the office even if the they could work from home. He said test and trace was vital and the govenrnment responded by letting the testing system fall apart and failing to get tracing off the ground at all. He said we needed to be prepared to wait until next year before we could fully go back to normal and the PM told everyone we'd be fine by Xmas.

If Chris Whitty's earlier advice had been heeded then he might not have had to give the advice he's giving now.

It was always going to be difficult to manage this but the government have seriously left us on the back foot.

Lockdown just won't work now unless we have the military on the streets to help enforce and that just isn't going to happen. People are just treating it as a joke now and don't care about the ramifications. I know numerous people who have continually broken the law since March and plaster it all over social media. Seen one extended family recently who all came together for a celebration which included at least seven, possibly more, different households and they are meant to be in a lockdown in Greater Manchester. Then you have to assume having all been together they then all go back to work, school, college etc and mingling with others. Only takes one to have it and goodness knows how many they go on to infect. I don't understand the mentality of some people and why they think they are above the law. Hope they are last in line when a vaccine is available.

That's clearly bollocks. Lockdown did work because the numbers fell dramatically. Its only after we started to slacken off the control measures and idiots took that as a signal that they could ignore any kind of distancing an self protection

Of course if you don't practice protocols as I said the virus will spread quicker amongst super spreaders and others but that is not the point.

Lock downs only increase suicide rates , mental health issues , delay life saving diagnosis of many diseases and criplle the livelihoods of many , many of whom will never recover.

What you do is look after the vulnerable and improve your protocols of self testing , contact tracing and personal safety.

Let the citizen that is able to look after their own health and the rest will take care of itself.

of course if you lock down everything and impose the spread will reduce as this virus is spread through human breathing but while its spread very easily for obvious reasons its not nearly as lethal as politicians and bureaucrats make out.

Look as the numbers they speak for themselves and most 2 and 3 waves for this " pandemic " are less lethal that the first.

Again this virus in various strains and mutations will be around for a long time to come so learn to live with it like you have to live with all other risks.

Lock down again at your peril.

The government are the reason everyone is now treating it as a joke and not listening. Cummings is the reason.

Its going to get colder from next week, I really don't think a lock down will be that hard to enforce over winter personally.

For me, the restrictions are there but adherence is a different matter

Do you not think it will make people go in each other's houses, rather than sit outside the pub or in each other's gardens?
Genuine question that mate.

Sounds like the restrictions set to be announced in the North East later today are stricter than those we currently have in most parts of Greater Manchester (10pm curfew on pubs/restaurants, no socialising with anyone outside your own household regardless of the setting) - this makes little sense, unless GM is set to be put under the same set of more restrictive rules in the near future?
