The opening gambit by the Government earlier in the year by being so reactive for me, has been the biggest mistake made so far. As you say, we are an Island and knew exactly what was coming our way, yet we seem to actively encourage it arriving.

Once it got hold in the country, blame can be apportioned both on the Government and the public.

Today, we are where we are and we need to help each other in what is the most difficult part of the year when people want to get together to not kick the pants out of the 5 day relaxation and lets try and get back to normality asap

I heard they thought it would burn out before it reached us like a lot of other viruses, in spite of evidence to the contrary. That and Cummings herd immunity and viewing the old and vulnerable as expendable.

because I'm not going to be coerced by emotional pleading about a "nightmare" when I should be able, as should everyone, to make an educated choice on the vaccine they want that is safe and has a 9.5/10 chance of working as opposed to 6/10, the latter leaving you with 40% chance of being buggered anyway. That's hardly the end of the nightmare, it just singles you out as the likely victim when everyone who's had a good one reverts to normal behaviour and spreads the virus whilst you're unprotected.

Your "nightmare" emotional blackmailing is exactly why people will distrust vaccination and it being thrust on them, until Oxford is up to the same thresholds and unanimous positive feedback and approval then even the most optimistic person should be reserved about it.
The likelihood is that it will not have a 40% chance of being buggered , but probably a somewhat higher chance of having some symptoms than the mRNA vaccines. We cannot know at the moment.

From a personal basis I am likely to be one of the earlier people offered a vaccine. I work in the NHS I am treating covid patients on a regular basis as well as other non covid patients. I am over 60.

If this vaccine is approved by the regulators and I get offered it I am rolling my sleeve up faster than a rat up a drain.

Salford 57 – down from 73. .Total cases 13, 135. Weekly 502. Still doing remarkably well – clearly the student influx drove cases way up here. Pop score up 22 to 5075. Weekly Pop down 21 to 194. Huge fall as it was pushing 700 in the top 5 worst list in UK 3 weeks ago.

Stockport 56 – down from 101. Just 2 cases separating these 4 boroughs like the 'olden days' of Summer when this was the norm. Total cases 10, 313. Weekly 549. Pop score up 19 to 3515. Weekly Pop down 17 to 188. Now 3 boroughs with weekly Pop under 200. A number that would not usually be anywhere near having tier 3 status. GM had none under 200 a week ago and only 2 under 400 this time two weeks ago. Showing how GM has progressed in that fortnight.

Trafford 38 – down from 64. Total cases 8559. Weekly 336. Lowest in GM and falling daily. Lowest weekly numbers since early September. Pop score up 16 to 3606. Lowest in GM today. Cuts the gap to Stockport for best in GM over the pandemic by another 3 to just 91. It was over 200 a couple of weeks ago. Weekly Pop down 37 to 132. Lead over Stockport for best weekly pop score increases to 56. Will soon hold both records as clear best in GM who may well be really annoyed at being in Tier 3 with a score this low.

Cancer deaths UK 165000 a year
Covid deaths UK 57000
Flu deaths UK 11000 to 50000 a year
Suicide deaths in the UK 5700 a year
Road deaths in UK 1870 a year

So about 0.08% of the UK population (the vast majority being 75+ , mostly in care homes and most with at least one co-morbidity have sadly died.
The Country will be in financial ruin for a decade, damaging the hopes dreams and prospects of future generations.
The criminal failure to place a cordon sanitaire around the highly vulnerable will imo be the key conclusion of how this crisis has been mishandled.

Great figures for Oldham...weekly pop score looks ace.

I don't think that would be any cause for concern. The 62% is good enough.

Also, they've recently published separate data showing the immune response is actually better if anything in older subjects (that was a surprise).

What is the reason for concern?
The study in the Lancet reported that the vaccine was better tolerated in older age groups.
