Looking at the pitch now looks like South Africa will need at least a 50+ England get anything over 270 lead that be hard to chase.

Bess has bowled poorly and root should be in his ear saying he needs to pull his deliveries back a little. I'd take a 4-0 series loss if it means root is replaced by stokes.

The Proteas are 54 runs behind at stumps on day 2,with two wickets in hand. Decent fight back by England after that 4th wicket partnership between Elgar and van der Dussen put on 117 runs. Five wickets in the evening session reeled the South Africans back though. Could be an interesting test match.

I was totally wrong about that pitch and South Africa getting shits loads of runs seems this pitch is doing just enough and thought Best holding an end and not going for loads helped at the other end thought all England bowlers did well. A lead of 300 will be a big ask for South Africa to chase. England big favourites now.

Excellent day for England.

The signs were ominous when Elgar and van der Dussen (anyone else think he looks like the Terminator?) were settled at the crease but we’ve fought back strongly to put ourselves into a commanding position.

And yet Kallis said before play started yesterday that the pitch was a featherbed, and the Proteas captain said theyd' have chosen to bat as well, had he won the toss. Weird that they all seem to have read it wrong.

funny what the so called pro's know ??? you did not have to be a rocket scientist to see the doubt in the batters minds and the your never in on this wicket, england looked to have lost it but pulled it back at the end and we need to clean up the tail, and then bat better and 200 to 250 lead on this wicket in the 4th innings should be good enough

South Africa out for 223, leaving England with a first innings lead of 46. Handy, given it's likely to be a low scoring match over the five days. If we can get around 300 second time around, that may well be enough.
