Just reading about the incident now. Am I right in thinking that Aggers and Tuffers knew the ball had hit the ground after coming off Root's bat? If so, then it's utterly bizarre that they were still claiming that it was out!Brilliant coverage of the Root not out VAR review on 102. Tuffers and Aggers didn’t know the rules and had given a stonewall dismissal. It turned into comedy gold.
They knew it, the commentator for Talk Shite knew it and so did Micky Arthur, Sri Lanka’s coach. Root hit the ball into the ground and it bounced up and hit his glove before being “caught”. I don’t think any of the pundits had seen a similar incident in their long careers, on and off the field.Just reading about the incident now. It seems the appeal was maybe for hit the ball twice (Root's bat and Root's glove), rather than the catch but if the ball has hit the ground in between the batsman hitting the ball twice then it's clearly not out. Even a simpleton like me can work that one out without the need to consult rule 33.2.2.2 ffs! They knew it, the commentator for Talk Shite knew it and so did Micky Arthur, Sri Lanka’s coach. Thinking about it, there is probably a logic to this being not out eg a batter chilling the ball up to a fielder after they had played a ball into the ground couldn’t be caught out.
Cricket's got some obscure rules for sure but I honestly can't work out how an incident like this has caused so much confusion. How do these umpires keep up with these rules and remember them! I though it was out! Been watching crickets for a long time never seen an incident like that so didn’t know the rules.
