It seems the appeal was maybe for hit the ball twice (Root's bat and Root's glove), rather than the catch but if the ball has hit the ground in between the batsman hitting the ball twice then it's clearly not out. Even a simpleton like me can work that one out without the need to consult rule 33.2.2.2 ffs!
I believe you are still allowed to hit the ball twice anyway if it is a) accidental (not wilful) or b) to guard one's wicket (unless it impedes a fielder attempting to field the ball or take a catch) and that deliberate second hit is not using the hand not holding the bat. You'd think they'd know a) as professionals, good job the umpires did.

good reply by england and root holding the innings together but a very poor sri lanka team

A propos of nothing. Question for the cricket nerds on here.
Was it Graeme Pollock or Colin Bland who could throw a ball in from the rope and hit the stumps with it? I remember my stepfather telling me that there was a South African cricketer who would do that.
I personally have never seen any cricketer do it. Although Clive Lloyd could be deadly accurate with his throw-ins.
Who is the greatest fielder in the world, at present, in your opinion?

Think it was Bland but Jonty Rhodes was also able to deliver the same results probably the best fielder I have seen.

Jadeja is widely regarded as the best all-round fielder at the moment. Maxwell, Stokes, AB de Villiers, Smith, Pollard and Kohli are excellent as well.

The likes of Rhodes, Gibbs, Symonds, Ponting, M Waugh and Collingwood were all good ones, too.
