County cricket is full of good players?? Well come on name them? From what I see anyone who shows anything resembling a bit of form or promise gets a shot at it. Sibley Crawley Lawrence etc.

Jimmy Anderson I'd guess gets his wickets for Lancs at under 10s when he plays for them which underlines the lack of quality.

I actually agree with you about test cricket being dead in the old style. We just don't produce players like that anymore the 20-20 rewards are too big so that's where the up and coming talent obviously want to be involved.

my point is build a test team that only play red ball cricket at county levels in 4 day cricket
forget the money players in ODI at test cricket they don't have the skills needed to bat for a whole day

give them 2 years to build a test team for the next ashes in 2 years in england ? pick 20 players that are not allowed to play white cricket of any sort just county cricket and test cricket. its just like starting over again play from scratch

Sound idea if they go on central contracts and get compensated for any lost earnings.

One of the big issues atm for me is the lack of a genuine all rounder e.g. Stokes.
Therefore the line up is unbalanced.
The bowling attack albeit good is too similar at present and lacks a quality spinner.
And then there’s the opening spots ho hum.

you can have the best bowlers in the world but your batting line up will let you down

simple rule is get runs on the board and play scoreboard cricket ? pressure of a good score on the board buts the fear of god into england and we fold like a pack of cards

that is the key ? maybe also have a rule of 2 seasons without white cricket with central contracts
the ashes are every 2 years played home or away so maybe that is the key with a 2 seasons cap

you have to play one or the other and no crossing over ? 2 years should be enough to learn test cricket and value your wicket and bat for a long time

Problem however when sides in the shortened format are not faring well; can they ask for certain players to be released?

In this country we are too busy playing 20/20 or the hundred. I know that these are the formats that bring in the money but there needs to be more balance in the season’s calendar there just aren’t enough 4 day games and therefore the counties are not producing good young test players.

Difficult to know given Root is so undemonstrative - whether he listens to anyone else or has preset plans isn't obvious to me. Moeen as V-C seems a bit odd though, again a limited choice - he may well be Wilson though and has just given up!
Joe Root is a fantastic cricketer but he has never struck me as a leader like Hussain or Vaughan did. I still think a better choice of captain would be Ben Stokes when he’s back available.

Decent point about Jadeja.
And Moeen too.
Good point

Its great in theory but it's never going to happen is it. Couple of examples off the top of my head Parkinson and Mahmood at Lancashire. Now I'd have both in the team for the next test but there is no way that them 2 lads for example are going to turn their backs on white ball cricket where the money is.

Realistically I think the days of Cook Atherton etc are gone and I think that's the case all round the world. The Indian openers have been good but they are both outstanding batsmen in all forms.
