Stokes has a rather fractious relationship with the ECB, and up until 2020 hadn’t captained any significant side.

Traditionalists will likely view him as not the kind of ‘character’ to captain England, whereas others might view that sort of ‘character’ as exactly what England needs.

Leaving character aside, that lack of captaincy experience may not make him any better than Root.
I’m not sure about him not being any better than Root. I think naturally he is a better leader and his character is exactly what England needs as he wouldn’t be bothered who’s nose he put out of joint.

I keep saying it you have to have red ball cricket in the summer Mon -Thurs.The hundred,Blast and one day cup on Fri,Sat and Sun.
We need to find a quality opener to go along side Hameed. The middle order of Bairstow and Pope both get bowled and Lbw too much and are not test standard see the 2 dismissals today.
This is my idea of a squad.
Jennings,Hameed,Root,Salt,Vince,Abel,Lammonby,Whiteley,Stokes,Foakes,Billings or Simpson,Woakes,Ali,Leach Parkinson,Wood,Anderson,Robinson,Broad,Mahmood and Parkinson. We need to pick a squad stick with it and change the captain.
Root hammered Anderson and Robinson in this match. He has no plans it seems unlike Vaughan and Strauss who tried things.
For me he is too quick onto the defensive in the field.
Think Pope is a good player but needs to improve his defensive technique. He’s had 20 Tests, average 32, but those have been spread out over three years and he hasn’t played against the Australians at all. Even this summer it’s been weird: playing him against New Zealand and then out for the first three Tests but then back for the Oval. I’d certainly have him over Bairstow or Ali, but I agree on sticking with players,

Yes, but being pugnacious doesn’t necessarily mean you are strategically smart and capable of making the correct decisions during the game. Leadership is only one aspect of captaincy, and Botham and Flintoff showed that the inspirational individual does not always make the best captain.

that is the key ? maybe also have a rule of 2 seasons without white cricket with central contracts
the ashes are every 2 years played home or away so maybe that is the key with a 2 seasons cap

you have to play one or the other and no crossing over ? 2 years should be enough to learn test cricket and value your wicket and bat for a long time
It’d never work. All the players would chase the coin in white ball franchise cricket.

And not be arsed if you piss another player off, that is why I was a crap captain when I was playing.

yep
you have to be ruthless and then you will earn the respect
i get the feeling to many cooks spoil the broth with england and root is not man enough to say no

the bowlers seem to set their own fields and bowl to them and not roots plans ? root should be setting the fields and say to the bowler i want to you bowl to my plan. behind the scenes also is a big part of being captain and knowing the other teams players and plans to working them out and what they don't like to face

its pretty poor by the captain if we are just going through the motions time and time again
but the one big hate i have with the england setup is the lack of a full time spinners ? is it root of the ECB and coach choice but for 4 years we have never bedded in a full time spinner and keep going back to moeen ali because he is a so called around rounder ?

Swann’s last Test was in December 2013, and I’d argue that England have been toying with the idea of spinners ever since. If Old Trafford shows signs of turning, Kohli could play both Jadeja and Ashwin, which would show up England’s paucity even more.

Just read that England haven’t lost both home series in a summer for 35 years.

then why bother with test cricket then ?
test cricket should be the top of the tree and the pride of place being pick to play test cricket for your country
until we get test cricket sorted out once and for all or we lose it for good ? its that easy to say to the players

can test cricket change or live alongside ODI white ball cricket i don't think it can sadly
i would love somebody from the old school test cricket come out and try and get something going to get test cricket going in the right direction.. a boycott or botham saying to the ECB right enough is enough ? back test cricket now or face losing it for good ? its clearly broken and work needs doing to rebuild
