It’s the same as ‘player of the match’ rather than man of the match in men’s football. Changes for changes sake.

I think it's less clunky to use gender neutral language than using batswoman and woman of the match.

It's also something that's happened more and more over the last century or so. There's loads of professions that used to be split into male and female nouns that now just use one, it's just the natural evolution of language as women became part of the workforce, and now it's happening in sport because women's sport is becoming more mainstream.
 
No wonder are bowlers get injured so frequently batters never give them a break
