Need to get our run rate high because we know the other teams in the top four will have a high run rate plus it might go down to run rate

Excellent knock from Malan, completely justifying his selection in the side - which he has to do almost every time he plays. I personally was questioning his selection, happy to admit I clearly don't know what I'm talking about! He's a lovely player to watch when on form, rotating the strike and putting the bad balls away. A wonderful century for him and a brilliant platform for our big hitters.
Malan and Root are the glue that holds together the rest of our line up that are basically ”sloggers”.

Bairstow and Livingstone should be closer to being dropped. Livingstone only stays in the side because of his bowling option.

LL more myth than legend. Buttler should have been a bit more restrained, otherwise this is what happens. The best batters don’t try and hit EVERY ball for 6

We still need that bit of aggression in the top order and I think Bairstow offers that, whilst being able to play some proper shots. You could see today he was struggling but he didn't end up being out for 10 off 25 balls and soaking up too many deliveries. And when he does fire he can blitz the opposition. From the scores I have seen in ODI cricket over the past 12 months or so, bowlers seem to be pegging things back and there aren't a plethora of 350-400 scores anymore.

You just have to manage the situation. We're getting another lesson here. If Root goes, having anchored the innings and you're just coming in then don't slog the first ball you get. Bide your time. Plenty of overs left, the score is already 300 so a little bit of patience is needed.

What's is good losing wickets when you already have a decent score is the batters all get a hit in India conditions! It's what you need if you going to win the World Cup

Much was said about how deep England bat, and it's a good job because clearly the middle order doesn't fancy doing much of it!

The best teams dont throw away wickets like this. The potentially lost net run rate could really hurt us as it’s going to be very tight for at least 2 of the semi final spots

It will be an incredibly pleasant and unexpected surprise if we retain the World Cup, we are too one dimensional and seemingly unable to adopt our gameplay to the situation. Morgan seems to think it’s fine, Atherton seems to think it’s due to Bangladesh, neither of them question Englands mentality

We don’t have the bowlers.

India, Australia and New Zealand have better attacks than us.

I reckon we’re 4th favourites, possible joint with South Africa.

Yeah we could have done with closer to 400 to help on that front. But we'll see. We lost to NZ and can probably lose another couple of games and still qualify on NRR. Let's just win our remaining games so it doesn't come down to that! Scoring at 6 an over for the final 10 overs when we had 7 wickets in hand is poor though. Too many bad shots. Someone needed to stay in, it's easy to say "get to 40 overs then attack" but you have to have a bit of discipline.

The other aspect that needs factoring is that the grounds are much bigger here, meaning six hitting is harder and you’re more likely to get caught on the boundary.

The Old Trafford effect.
