Yup, Smith is a real find in all formats. He’s a good example of the meticulous approach the England coaches etc now have towards appraising the talent available.
Not sure about dropping the Pontiff after his performance in this Test, although there are others knocking on the door.
My issue with Pope is there is no middle ground.Low score most of the time.Occasionally a big un.

He is a bit better than a 9 though, as a tailender opened the innings (nightwatchman last night presumably?)
He wasn't a nightwatchman, but you're absolutely right they had matt parkinson opening the batting for some reason.

Very surprising to see that, when he was at Lancashire he was one of the few guys who's batting was so poor he pushed Jimmy up to 10! Takes some doing that does.

He was serving the same function of a night watchman, so their 19 year old doesn't have to worry as much whether he will be fielding or opening first up with an immediate morning declaration. Parky hasn't improved that much as a batsman.

Piss poor game management from Lancs. Team selection, not playing a recognised spinner. Look how Parkinson tidied up our tail end. Not declaring on Monday evening, and the reluctance to bowl Anderson once we had them 7 down.

Anderson was captain!

He normally is effective for 5 overs a day with the new ball, so it stood out he only had 4 today before a prolonged late spell.

Lancashire ended Monday on 120-1.

Got my days mixed up when I asked if we were batting i thought today was Thursday lol

Just reading Ben Stokes' book ON Fire.

He's a big fan of Davieee Warner I see!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes I know the history) Loves to drop in a dig though!

As predicted, Archer is in the squad for the second test next week. Expect him to pull a hamstring in training now. He's a fantastic bowler but he's bloody fragile. Same can be said for Wood as well.

Can’t see us picking Archer if we do it’s mental because of his fitness reliability! Maybe the 4th or 5th test match, if he has played another 1 or 2 4 day county game though..
