No I’m saying don’t be a shithouse who bets against England players recovering from serious injury. Aggers is an ex England player so it’s akin to a City player blaming Bell, Lake or Rodders for being injured.

Yes he’s a boring twat too but I have quite liked his commentary / punditry over the years. He was a bang average bowler though.

He didn't actually bet against and England player returning though did he?

I listened to TMS all week and I'm sure they played the interview from Hobart when him and Stokes had the conversation. He asks how confident Stokes is, Stokes says I bet my hat he'll play Test cricket again, Agnew accepts.

Agnew never even really made the counter-bet, and then he was a pretty good sport about the whole thing, bought a hat for Stokes and clearly used it as a prop to get more out of him in an interview, Stokes cleverly IMO told Archer to fire him up for the game.

I also think that, as bloke who was the lightning quick young bowler that got loads of hype in the early 80's and never fulfilled his potential because of repeated injuries, Agnew is pretty sensitive to that kind of thing, and knows exactly what Archer has been through better than most people now commenting on the exchange.

All’s well that ends well. Hopefully, Joffrey will play in the next 2 tests and acquit himself well.

Yes Aggers has taken it on the chin even if it’s been embarrassing for him. It was clearly a powerful motivational tool Joffrey.

Reckon Jofra would be more offended about the repeated misspelling of his name tbh ;-)

Cook has been released, as has Overton.

If we win the series at Old Trafford then we might see some changes in the 5th test. I think Crawley and Pope will get the series though. Individually Crawley shouldn't be in the side, but as a partnership with Duckett they've been successful. Having to bowl to a left/right handed combination with the height difference makes it very difficult for a bowling attack to settle. I think England like how disruptive they are together. He's an infuriating player though. It's not easy to open the batting at test level but he keeps making the same mistakes time and time again and isn't showing any signs of improvement - in fact he's getting worse if anything!

Pope is a tricky one...number 3 isn't an easy position to bat in. You can be in very early and up against the new ball or come in when things are easier. The contrast between his 1st and 2nd innings (46avg-19avg) is vast though and surely points at a mentality issue?

Bethell hasn't played enough to directly compare, but number 3 is the only place I see him getting in. I can't see Stokes using him as our principle spinner. I checked that NZ series and the latest he came out to bat in the 6 innings he played was the 5th over! So he was thrown in at the deep end! An average of 52 suggests he coped alright with that, but his highest 1st innings score was 16.

The thing with Crawley is when he does come off he's won you the game before lunch, and the Aussies respect him for that brilliant 90 he hit against them last time. As you said the partnership with Duckett has been working and I wouldn't rip it up when there isn't exactly a host of openers banging the door down.

Australia has been the graveyard for plenty of English cricketers. I would expect Stokes and McCullum will continue their approach of instilling confidence in the side and taking the pressure to perform off individuals. We had a long period under Root where one bad score meant you were out of the side and it did nothing but create additional fear of failure.

We've got two tests against India before the Ashes. Nowhere near enough time to make major changes to the side. We all know what we're likely to get with Crawley. Change him for Sibley, Ahmed or Haines and unless they go and get big scores they'll be eaten alive. We win and lose as a team and I can't see any major changes now unless we need them in the ashes!

Dawson in the squad for next test. His first class batting average is 38. Bowls a bit too!

England docked 2 world championship test points and the team fined 10% of their match fee for slow over rates at Lord's yet nothing for India who were even slower......

They must discount the overs India bowl or its much more not fair when where spin is abundant in certain countries! If we take 6/7 minutes for drinks is it Englands fault or the umpires for never being hard on the players!

It’s why I’ve said England will never ever win the test match world champions

So when Jadeja went for a "nature break" on Monday evening that would count towards England's slow over rate?

I don't get it. Not that I'm blaming Jadeja by the way.

That break was allowed for, England were just too slow I’m afraid and need to address the issue.

I’m not sure how putting suggested things like clocks and run penalties improves the game as teams will start to get tactical with it so think we’re stuck with what we have.

I'd say that was different, as the delay in taking tea by England asking for the extra half hour would seem very harsh.

However, on day 5 of a test match, all the overs have to bowled if the weather holds.

There should compulsorily be 90 overs in each of the first four days. Overs required reduced for weather etc. 6 hours play/90 = 4 mins per over.
A post match fine hardly compensates spectators who have been cheated of 10 overs or so.

quite, the fine is irrelevant - what's 10% of a fee to them?

It's fairly astonishing to me that they were found to be 2 overs short, and the 5%/1 pt per over is the standard.

However, amongst lots of other things, an innings that lasts less than 80 overs does not count towards over rate calculations.
