Stokes can be the 4th bowler, but Joe Root can not be the option for spin and getting wickets. This is why Bashir has to play, my pick would be Archer Wood Carse Bashir Stokes

I personally think there's an obsession with pace and it's shadowing the critical fact you also need to fundamentally bowl well and extract bounce from the pitch. I'm not sure Wood has the release height to be successful, but I would probably select the bowling attack you've stated. What I posted before is what I think Stokes will do, I think he'll go all seam and rely on Root if we need a spinner.

England can play Pope as a wicket keeper and still play all 4 and Bashir
But England will name 3 quicks and Bashir and have Stokes bowling after the ball goes soft

Having the options is the key, the Aussie will play Nathan Lyon's because he's done well at Perth before, so england must have a change-up at both ends after the new ball goes soft and Bashir spin and Stokes mixed up cutters and slower balls.

No way would I be dropping Smith he's been a revelation. If it were up to me I'd have taken the young Leg spinner Renan Ahmed. His stats this year in County Cricket have been great and he's turning into a real genuine all-rounder aswell, but maybe it's a bit too soon for him being so young, a bad away Ashes could ruin him. (Just seen he is injured)

The thing with Bashir is he hasn't shown me he can tie an end down for a long spell, he seems to bowl a lot of 4 balls. I'd rather have the workhorse Carse bowling some short stuff during those periods when the ball goes soft than an ineffective spinner who goes at over 4 an over which is what I think will happen to Shoaib this tour.

What we would do to be able to select Graeme Swann in this side. Been slim pickings for English spinners since he retired and we haven't won a Test in Australia either. I genuinely believe the best off-spinner in England at the moment is Joe Root.

I could see us drawing or even winning the series if we win the opening test in Perth. I think we’ll go with an all-pace attack and rely on Root as an occasional spin option.

England going with 4 fast bowlers is crazy because the ball they use is shit after 20 overs, the Kookaburra ball can be unplayable in the first 20 overs and after that you have to bend your back if you want bounce, Mark Wood is not the type to bend his back, but he's probably the fastest bowler out of everybody.

Stokes will be the key to taking the old ball and using cutters and slower balls and then the option of spin comes into play. The Aussies will play Nathan Lyons so the wicket will take spin

This first test is the key to the whole series, If england win the first test then winning the Ashes will be on
But please don't do what we did in the last ashes with the first ball wicket, We lost the Ashes on the first ball

They've been using it on County cricket but plenty of these haven't played enough to have direct experience of it. The data will be there though. Wood and Archer early and then Carse, Stokes and Atkinson have the skills to extract more with the older ball.

It gives us more runs on paper too and I'm starting to edge in favour of that selection. Lyon is miles ahead of what we have available, there's no guarantee Bashir takes wickets but there is a guarantee he doesn't score runs.

I’m very excited I get to watch the cricket and F1 this weekend at decent times and it’s you cunts up in the middle of the night questioning why you’re doing.

Having said that, the Newcastle match is on at 1:30am.
