Cycling Advice

Afternoon all,

I have just got into cycling, have been doing it on the roads but with the lockdown lifting the roads are getting busy and have to be honest im a bit anxious about getting out there. Looking to get into indoor cycling. I am wanting to start on a budget. Anyone else here do indoor cycling or zwift etc?

If so is my best/most cost effective route into this with something like the Tac-X Blue Matic and a TacX Speed + Cadence Sensor?

I have seen a few second hand models on the bay etc, something like Tacx Satori T2400 near me seems to have bids around 150-200. Would that be a good starting point as long as its in good nick? its a few years old but for my basic/starter needs it could be worth a shot?

The T2400 I would seemingly bluetooth to my iPad and just run zwift on that?

Cheers

I do zwift and the best way forward for me was Apple TV box which runs the zwift platform at a decent resolution and will hook up two bluetooth devices with a bonus you can use on any TV you are choosing the wrong time to venturing into smart trainers as prices are through the roof thats if you can get them! I had the Satori and its adequate enough, I am currently running on an Elite Direto which has a built in power meter so training is accurate. Make sure you buy a fan ;)

Cheers mate, yeah I would like to get it running on an Apple Tv eventually. I am living with my parents at the moment though so I dont have much room. I would have to setup the bike out on the decking in the garden lol. Hence the iPad on a stand being my best option really.

When I get my own place I could get something a bit better.

The Elite looks very nice, not going to drop that much on one just at the moment. I think I will see if I can pick up a decent second hand one and see how I get on.

Define budget?

These things are not cheap when you factor in the turbo and the years subscription. I'd love one but dont have a suitable spot + the outlay is the cost of a decent bike.

Looking at around £200, the Tac-X Matic with the sensor is about £180 all in and you can get second hand TacX with the built in bluetooth etc for about 150-200.
The subscription I am not factoring in to that.

That is not so bad. I have a friend who paid close to a grand for his set up.

I am old fashion and follow my old man's advice, put your heal on the peddle, straighten your leg, and that's the 'height' of your ssaddle. My old man would always be telling me stories about going down to belle vue and watching Reg Harris. He spoke about him alot , when we were clearing out dads flat we found a letter and a signed picture from Reg Harris to my dad ( I guess my dad was around 13 at the time ), dad had never told us he had it !. Back in the day my dad was part of his club that won the kent time trial on his bike he built himself. Bought the tubing and wheels built the frame and wheels etc . I still have that bike under my lads beds. The only hand built Mills bike !
Brilliant story. Reminds me of something similar my dad told me and our kid, totally out of the blue. My dad was stationed in Germany for his national service (no he wasn¨t in the Luftwaffe) and a propos of nothing, one day slipped into the conversation that he saw Sterling Moss win the German grand prix and that, somehow, he had ended up getting one os Sterling¨s driving gloves. And that my nan had binned it when she cleared out her house in New Moston.
Back on to the thread, track riders are known for their fluid pedalling style. If you watch the 4 man pursuit you won¨t find a much better example of how to pedal. And sit. Rock solid. Poetry in motion.

My old man would tells us how he would be in the riders area at Belle Vue and he would watch Reg Harris setting his wheels up so that there spun so easily that the valve would always end up at the bottom when the wheel stopped. Something my old man use to do with his wheels. I think my old man rode with Manchester Wheelers but not sure.

Got back on a bike at the start of lockdown and do about 10 miles a day Mon-Friday, Ive spent years denouncing cyclists, even on here..
I have now formed the opinion that more drivers are cunts than cyclists ;-)
I now have legs like iron bars, im still a fat **** but a fit one ...
