Cycling Advice

Got back on a bike at the start of lockdown and do about 10 miles a day Mon-Friday, Ive spent years denouncing cyclists, even on here..
I have now formed the opinion that more drivers are cunts than cyclists ;-)
I now have legs like iron bars, im still a fat **** but a fit one ...
Most drivers are absolutely fine to be fair but you’ll get the odd one, usually in an Audi, who drives like an utter **** around you.

Had a day to forget on the bike Tuesday. Cycled out to the Wizard in Alderley to meet our kid for a suitably socially distanced ride. 20 mins into the ride his chain snapped so had to cycle and push him back at same time in torrential rain. Thought I¨d make most of the ride so set off on my own, did 52 miles and was coming through Poynton when my back tyre exploded. Not a problem I thought as I¨d just bought a new set of inner tubes with the requisite 80mm valve for my 66m deep section rims. Popped the inner tube in and was somewhat taken aback by the complete lack of valve protruding through the rim. Never mind, will ring the missus and get picked up. Looked at blank and very dead phone. So, knowing it would be a 2 hour walk in rather expensive cleated shoes I walked to Poynton railway station and waited for the train, hoping that the guard wouldn¨t ask for any money as I didn¨t have the proverbial pot to piss in. Just as the train pulled in I heard ¨welcome to the 19:30 to Manchester Piccadilly, please note that the wearing of face masks is compulsory on Northern Rail trains¨ Hastily made a rather strange looking face mask with my cycling glove, prayed to the Good Lord that I¨d be allowed to travel and kept very, very stil until Heaton Chapel where I disembarked and trudged home.
Moral of story - don¨t take the bike shop¨s word for length of valve and always charge phone before heading out on bike. And have a facemask on standby. And some money. And a chain link tool. And a brother who doesn¨t smash the life out of his chain by riding everyfuckingwhere on the big ring.

28 pan flat and reasonably quickish miles yesterday but nothing today - doing open water swim instead at Sale Water Park. Although, judging by the weather I may be doing an open water swim in the back garden soon.

I too was a car driver who was critical of cyclists in the past too. My car broke down in January and instead of paying the £300+ to get it fixed, I scrapped it and decided not to get a new one.

I’ve been cycling for three months now, after 23 years of not sitting on a bike. My legs haven’t looked as good for 15 years or so.

But I find that most drivers are fine, most cyclists too.

Like anything it’s always the small minorities at both ends of the spectrum who are tossers who ruin it for all the normal people in the middle.

I find some car drivers, especially young lads who speed far too much and young women who drive not looking at the road enough because they’re in the mirror or on their phone; are the worst examples.

But also some cyclists are a danger to themselves and to drivers too.

A major example is larger roundabouts that have blue “CYCLISTS DISMOUNT” signs heading towards every exit of the roundabout but see cyclists ignore those signs and carry on cycling around the roundabout. If drivers know they’re only looking out for cars at large roundabouts, especially those with 5 or 6 exits and then a cyclist comes flying round it.

There are certain lanes that drivers have to concentrate on, looking at cars and even just looking at the indicators of those cars in those certain lanes... then a cyclist will appear around the outside lane where cars don’t drive in when going round to certain exits of the roundabouts.

It could end very badly!

Brooklands roundabout between Timperley and Baguley is the biggest example I know of this.

If I ever saw it, I used to have the window down and shout “the signs say dismount you arsehole”. Even now as a cyclist I don’t agree with the cyclists ignoring these signs.

But, as I said, most drivers and most cyclists are fine.

Ah, it’s adventures like that which make life what it is ;-)
Glad you made it without a ticket check!

Once you get on a bike yourself and some **** drives past you really close, it gives you a new sense when driving to keep as much distance as you can. HOWEVER, a lot of cyclists are also cunts and they may just be Audi drives who have taken their bike for a spin.
