Manchester City have launched a British-record £40million bid for Brazilian defender Daniel Alves.

City made an approach to Barcelona for the man regarded as the world’s best right-back when they began negotiations to take midfielder Yaya Toure to Eastlands.

The Spanish champions immediately rejected the offer – but Alves has told the Nou Camp club that he wants the opportunity to speak to City because he feels promises have been broken on his contract situation at the club.

City are ready to treble Alves’ current £62,000-a-week wages.

The deal would make him both the world’s most expensive defender – smashing the previous record of £30million that Real Madrid paid for Pepe – and also the highest-paid player at the club.

City’s Abu Dhabi owners want to land at least one marquee name this summer.

And with Robinho set to depart – possibly to Barcelona – they have identified Alves as their man.

Alves, 28, has been taking English lessons for the past 12 months and, although there has been interest from Chelsea, he has personal reasons for choosing Manchester ahead of London.

His head has been turned so much by the determination of City to bring him to England that he will wait until January or even next summer to get his move.

A club source confirmed: “City’s interest is 100 per cent and Dani is excited by the prospect of playing in the English Premier League for a club that has plans to become the best in the world.”

City boss Roberto Mancini is a big admirer of the man who has become key for both Barcelona and Brazil in recent years.

Mancini’s preferred formation is to play with two holding midfielders so that his full-backs can join the attack at will – and there is no one better in the world in that role than Alves.

City feel that they will get two players for the price of one such is Alves’s versatility down the right flank and are ready to pay the price to get him

Alves, a married father of two, is also a dead-ball specialist.

Last summer he scored a sensational free-kick against South Africa to win the Confederations Cup for his country.

City will have to wait until after the World Cup to speak in person with Alves – if they can tempt Barcelona into selling.

Brazilian coach Dunga has turned his team’s World Cup training camp in Johannesburg into a boot camp in a bid to lift the trophy for a sixth time.

Dunga confiscates all mobile phone and laptop computers during the day, allowing players to speak to family and friends only during the evening.

He has also banned all transfer and contract negotiations during the tournament and has told agents to stay away from his players.

City, meanwhile, are continuing to negotiate with Barcelona over Toure.

The midfielder, brother of City skipper Kolo, is refusing to be used as a makeweight in the Catalans’ bid to land Cesc Fabregas.

City are prepared to pay £25m – but that is £10m short of Barca’s valuation.

Eastlands officials hope the La Liga giants resurrect their interest in current British-record signing Robinho so that a player exchange can be agreed.

Re: Dani Alves

To be fair the guy is easily twice as good defensively as Maicon (who is admittedly terrible) who people on here seem to love, and is only a little behind Maicon as an attacking force. His freekicks are also great. But 40 mil!! LOL, don't make me weep! More money for Alves than Barca paid for Villa? That would be very foolish. I recon at the right time you could get Torres for 40 mil! Alves for 20 mil would be ok, but not much more.

I think you might need to give your head a slight wobble there mate. Not a massive one mind, just a slight one.

The £40m our increadibly generous owners may be willing to spend on this guy (which by the way isn't exactly coming out of our pockets or funding one of our direct rivals) might be a ridiculous amount for any one player. But considering to the rest of the world we are simply a top 6 English club in the Europa league who hasn't won a trophy in over 3 decades who is trying to sign the 1st choice RB of the recognised biggest and best team in the game right now whom probably wouldn't sell if they where given the choice and given the lad is also a Brazilian international considered by many as either the 1st or second best RB in the world depending on what mood they're in AND the fact he is 28 which for a defender is relatively young and could well be about to hit his prime......

Well. I guess taking all that into account we are gunna have to bite the bullet and pay the excruciatingly colossul fees for players like that. Personaly i reckon he is yet another big time player using a link with us to get his own club to offer a better contract IE Higuain etc.... But then again i'm a typical pessimistic nob head.

I think you're thinking small time again. Getting to the top table doesn't mean having to get shafted on the way up. We can get there by building a team that win things, not by throwing exorbitant amounts of cash at the big boys to flex our financial muscle. I personally don't think Alves is worth £40 million and I don't care if Barca might sell for that amount and it would be a coup for us. I think it undermines our project in some ways which was supposed to be about turning this club into the best in the world not waving wads of cash in other teams faces to show off. Just a personal feeling that's all.

On the Higuain front I thought he was dreadful yesterday and I couldn't believe he got the nod for target man over D. Milito who is in much better form.

Re: Dani Alves

Would Dani Alves improve our team? Yes he would, is he worth 40 million? Not really no, is it my money the sheik is spending? No, so do I care about the prize? No not really.

Sign him up Mancini ;-)
