What is there not to like about this deal? On a free, one of the best RB's in the world over the past decade, position is one of our problem areas, huge experience and by all accounts character.

No brainer.

Do love it when one person take the contrary route and everyone tries to reason with them for hours before realising the futility of their rationalising!

Signing the best right back for the last decade on a free and people are moaning

Ffs
We we've had maicon, Weah, Mcmanaman, Fowler etc etc. A week ago I was of the same opinion. You want the best for City, and when you have a reported £300m, then it's fair to wonder whether it's the best choice. Having a go at blues for voicing a doubt which you honestly must share to an extent is not what a forum is about. It's about exchanging views and seeing which one comes out on top.

Couldn't be happier, honestly. He's the consensus best right back in football and we are signing him potentially for free. This is what it's like to be City.

I think his dressing room presence is an underappreciated factor. He's a huge personality, already mates with several players on our squad (and Sanchez yet to come in) who can bridge the language gap and inject some fight into the team too.

Get in.

You know who thinks it's the best choice? Pep Guardiola. If you honestly think Alves is in the same park as Maicon or McManaman then you're delusional.

Sorry Karen, will try to keep opinions to a minimum.

I'd rather get my thoughts in now rather than blind faith then knee jerk 'He's shit!' after 3 games.

Not necessarily applying that train of thought to Alves but you get my point.
Writing a player off before he even gets here is nonsense and you will be the first on his thread putting the boot in if he doesn't get off to a flyer,it's all too predictable imo
Carry on as i'm out till there is news later hopefully

Where did I write him off? Show me.

No I won't be on here slagging him because I'm reasonable enough to know that a 34 year old shouldn't be expected to instantly adapt to a new league.

It's the 'HE'S THE BEST SIGNING EVER, YOU'RE TALKING RUBBISH' crew you wanna worry about. Usually the most fickle of the lot and will turn on players very quickly.

Guarantee a lot of the people criticising my opinion are the same one's who lauded then subsequently slagged off the Maicon signing.

I don't think that at all. I think it's a great buy. But I can understand where some people are coming from if they see a 34 year old coming in on a free. These types of deals usually don't work, but I think this one will

Again, agreed. As I've said all along I do think he'd be a good squad option.

A 34 year old as first choice having never played here? No.

It wouldn't matter if it was the premiership/La Ligue/Serie A or any other league knowing Peps system all ready and the vast amount of experience that comes with him Alves will fit in like a glove imho but i do think he is being brought in to help more in the Champs league more than anything else.

Why? My opinion on the player is that he's in his twilight years and could struggle. Sorry if that upsets people but it is what it is.
Some of your claims are factual and I agree with them. But you don't need to butter or up with innuendos like 'thats why he gets moved on.'

You are right. He is a great player who is now 34. He was not as good in his last season in Barca. He looked a lot better last season at Juve. So it could go either way. He is a risk, but he also has advantages: seems very fit, knows Pep's system, and has been of high quality to this point.

I generally don't like these types of acquisitions, and I don't like this one. But he could be a good addition.

Rather than flap ( and I'm not suggesting you are doing that) lets wait and hope he pans out a year or 2 more. He does have a few things going for him.

And for what its worth, for once I'm ecstatic about the price. :)

Schweinsteiger had been one of the best midfielders in the world prior to United signing him on a free.

I'll reiterate once again. Good squad player, high risk signing as a first choice.
But unlike you and me, Guardiola will have followed every minute of his games. He'll have looked at his physical performances to see if the decline you suspect is there is significant. I don't see how a player can play so well against Monaco against some seriously quick players, and not have something to offer us. Long term it's not an answer. But we need to win things next season. Can't keep saying next season.

You have to admit "Walker+Alves (on a free)" is much better than "Walker+ Nobody, or maybe Fernandinho filling in."

Schweinsteiger had been injured for the majority of the previous 3 years, and then proceeded to spend his time at United injured.

I think the comparison is poor.
