Dave Watson has neurodegenerative disease

I can remember that Ron futcher hatrick, iirc Channon got the other ?
To say i was surprised at the win is putting it mildly, prob RFs greatest game for City.think he was a better header of a ball than kicking it.

Watson playing fo England was a commanding figure,i always thought he and liverpools Phil thompson was the best centre back partnership.
Interesting that DW started out as a centre forward at Notts county, back in the early 70s/ late 60s.
I can't remember who scored the 4th at Chelses. Channons goals for us with his distinctive windmill celebration were a rarity. Even so apart from chatting to Dave my main memory was how impressively tall the new stand was.
The Futvhers looked pretty much the same but entirely different players. Paul was an elegant defender but Ron a rough and ready centre forward.
The article in Breakfast last week was touching seeing Dave Watson as a gentle old man rather than the hard as nails defender. It did mention City as a past club but apart from a single still pic at the end we didn't feature much. Typical BBC but unimportant as all older blues will wish him well.

I think the Futchers were both signed from Luton Town,by Book and Swales.

As you say, typical bbc nonsense in practically ignorinng Watsons City connection....how childish can you get bbc???

Watson won the majority of his England caps with us,played nearly everyone of his european games with us(uefa cup) ,and left us as one of the few English players to try his luck in German football.

I also remember Watson being on the winning side ,against City ,for quite a few teams after leaving us.....painful defeats at The Dell and Meadow Lane stand out..i wasn't at either game, but it was just typical City away from home stuff back in the day....which is why us battering Chelsea at stamford bridge stands out to this day.

As a teenager i always used to be proud when any City player turned out for England..Big joe Corrigan,Trevor Francis Peter Barnes and of course big Dave Watson, who i dont recall ever letting England down.

All Blues of a certain era remember the Ipswich Town bullet header..quite poignant those memories as we come to terms with the news of his illness....

Dave Watson scored against us the first time he played against us after leaving, when he came back from that short spell at Werder Bremen to face us with Southampton in January 1980. They beat us 4-1 and I think Channon also scored. Watson also got the only goal of the game when he scored against us for Derby in April 1984, the result that, IIRC, confirmed we wouldn't go up that season (though the game was up 3 or 4 weeks earlier, in fact).

I must say, I thought the lack of a focus on his time at City was simply a result of the BBC not having any especially memorable footage of him playing for us. None of his City goals were captured by the BBC cameras and they didn't have the rights to screen the 1976 League Cup final. On the other hand, they did have goals for Sunderland and England, plus footage of the 1973 FA Cup final. I'm sure if they'd had access to the footage, they'd have shown bloody-shirted warrior clips from the Newcastle game at Wembley as well as the spectacular Ipswich header.

They've been interviewing a poorly sounding Dave Watson on Talk Sport about the problems caused by heading the ball, but I assumed it was that other Dave Watson who played for Everton. Was it ours or are they both suffering from brain problems?

I assume it was 'our' Dave Watson. He has a Facebook page that his wife runs, and she recently promised that in the near future he'd be featured on BBC TV and Talksport. However, you should be able to tell if it did happen to be the ex-Norwich and Everton Dave Watson as he has a fairly broad Scouse accent.

And our Dave Watson has a pretty strong Nottingham accent. Hard to see how you could get the two mixed up!

Very sad news. I can't read the article as it's behind a paywall, but I saw the headline, and yes, he headed the ball a lot. Nothing got past him on that front.

He is without doubt one of the best players this club has ever had. His name isn't often mentioned, but he would walk into this current side, such was his dominance in midfield, particularly in the air.

I don't know what else I can say, other than he was a favourite of mine at the time he played for us, and one of the true greats that played for us years ago.

I don’t want to sound like I’m disrespecting Dave Watson’s condition or any other sufferer as that is not my intention.
He was my hero growing up.
But Pep must have had a big impact with reducing this awful disease by playing the game on the floor. Being copied at every level.
Obviously not Peps intention but a very good bi product of his playing style
it must have some kind of positive impact

So sad, dementia is a horrible, horrible disease, feel so much for him and his family and friends, hope they stay strong.

One of our greatest CB and leaders, a warrior.
100% this. My father-in-law has had 10 years of this, and we've recently had to place him in a care home. Just awful to see the person slowly disappear in front of your eyes.

Top player in his day, no messing about.
Horrible disease which my dad is suffering with currently, and just been put into Intermediate Care Home, soul destroying to see.

As Cloughie once said -
If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd of put grass up there !!
