A very sad way for one of the all-time greats - not just for Manchester City - to have to end his career.
It was a privilege to be in Etihad Stadium to watch him so often, and from our seats in CBL3, we had a perfect vantage point to observe his brilliance.
As I alluded to earlier, there was no better sight for me than to watch Merlin thread a perfectly weighted ball between opposing defenders for Leroy to run on to, and either score or set up a goal for another teammate.
But it wasn’t just his attacking prowess that endeared him to the Blue faithful; he wasn’t afraid to get stuck in and help defend. The idiots like gargoyle Gary used to accuse Fernandinho of committing "tactical fouls", but David wasn’t averse to making his fair share of them. And considering the treatment he received from opponents, he was a tough little fucker too.
Since his departure, we haven’t lacked top quality talent, but none of them has ever really replaced him, and I doubt any ever will.
All the best in your retirement, David, and I can’t wait to welcome you back to Etihad to show my appreciation of all your efforts in Blue.
