South Lakes zoo is pretty good and its one of the cheapest around too. Its compact and you don't have to walk a long way between enclosures as they're pretty much side by side. It's worth it to see the tiger climb that telegraph pole in about 2 seconds - if you ever thought you could outclimb a tiger this will hammer home the fact that you will be eaten even if you only had a foot to climb to safety!

Just beware of the monkeys around the cafe - must be scousers - they jump onto your table and nick your food literally from out of your hands. The lemurs will climb on your shoulder if you sit still enough.

This was a great shout! Went last Sunday and it was the best Zoo/Safari Park I have ever visited. The Madagascar enclosure was fantastic and I don't think you will experience getting this close to wild creatures (despite being in this place they are definitely wild)! Great value all round, but I would say take your own food as the fodder they served was the usual fast food offerings!

Thanks to the people that suggested the south lakes zoo, went today and the kids totally loved it, buy some food on the way in and go feed the kangaroos and if you have the nerve the emu's.

Get to the lion enclosure for around 1615 when they are locked inside (whilst the keeper gets their food ready), you can get within a couple of feet of these awesome animals, close up their roar is truly spine tingling.

Loads of monkeys emu's and kangaroos just freely wandering around mingling in with the visitors, it really is a good day out.

Its about a 2 hour drive from manchester and I'd recommend going on a fine day, its about a 15-20 minute drive from bowness/windermere if you fancy nipping there after for your tea by the lake.

-- Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:07 pm --

Oh and I forgot to mention chill factore are doing a special this summer holidays, 1 adult goes free with every child, paid £20 yesterday for 2 hours skiing for 2 of us (usually costs £45) think it applies to the other snow activities too.

Dovestone reservoir is a good shout, walking, climbing, cycling, sailing and all set in wonderful scenery.

Marbury country park in Northwich is good for an day out exploring, picnics, swimming in the outdoor pool or the lake. You can also have a great bike ride around the huge estate.

For a day on the beach, and not too far...West Kirby is ace. You can hire boats on the marine lake or go crabbing, or you can walk out to the hilbre islands which is a great adventure, but make sure you follow the tides.

If you have more than a day, go to Anglesey and the Great orme/Llandudno.
