Its a very long walk up the M6, maybe he just got tired at Wolverhampton.
Asked Geoff Thomas on Twitter about the walking to city quote and he said it was made up by the press-as despite loving city the time wasn't right due to the chaos at city at the time.

If Kevin De Bruyne is bought (circa. 30-40m) he will be one of City’s greatest ever signings. The Belgian international led the assists table in the Bundesliga with 20 to his name and has also chipped in with 10 goals. His performances helped Wolfsburg to stay 2nd in the Bundesliga with a 3-point advantage over third-placed Borussia Mönchengladbach. The ex-Chelsea man was also voted the best attacking midfielder in the league ahead of the likes of Thomas Muller (!?!) and Mario Gotze (?!?). I have watched him play on a number of occasions; he is easily one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe. Period.
