Mourinho: De Bruyne's mentality too weak for Chelsea

The Belgian is a target for Manchester City, with the Premier League runners-up reportedly planning a £50 million bid, but the Portuguese was not impressed by the player's desire

Jose Mourinhosays he soldKevin De Bruynebecause the midfielder's mentality was not strong enough to play forChelsea.

The Belgian, who is a target for Manchester City and could be the subject of a £50 million bid from Manuel Pellegrini, left for Wolfsburg in January 2014 in an £18m deal after struggling for game time.

De Bruyne has gone on to excel in the Bundesliga, notching a record-equalling 20 assists last season to attract the interest of City - a potential move Mourinho insists he would hold no regret over.

"I am happy for him, because he is a good kid," he told reporters. "I wanted to keep him. But he couldn't handle fighting for his place in such a competitive squad.

"He told me it was not in his personality to be competing for a position in the team. He needed a team where he knows he can play every game."

Mourinho says the increased competition for places at Chelsea was not to De Bruyne's liking despite City boasting similar strength in depth with the likes of David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Jesus Navas.

He continued: "I told him, 'This is Chelsea. You are very young, you have Eden Hazard, you have Mata, you have Willian, you have Schurrle, and I cannot promise you that.'

"He told me he was not happy. He was not training very well, I was asking for more and he was saying, 'I can't give you more. This is just my way'.

"So yes. I accept that if this his mentality and that if it is his choice to go, it is better for Chelsea to make a good deal.

"We sold him, made our money and it was fantastic because we bought him cheap and sold him for a fantastic price. Now Wolfsburg, if they make a fantastic deal, that is good for them."

Seeing as that he sold him in the same window it's unlikely he would have been competing for the same spot.

Maureen knows this is going to bite him on the arse and he's panicking a little i think, more mind game bollocks, which usually means trying to cover his back.

Mourinho has let some big and promising talents leave Chelsea, it's just an ego thing for him. Schurrle, Salah and De Bruyne were definitely good enough to play for Chelsea but were the anti-thesis of what Mourinho's about. They're exciting, off the cuff players who will try things and take people on by instinct. Same with Cuadrado, who has barely been given a chance despite looking fantastic when playing for Colombia. Players like Willian and Ramires seem to flourish more in the system, which is completely boring and I'm glad we dont have to watch it every week.
Even Hazard, who is obviously a fantastic player, seems inhibited sometimes by the demand for him from the manager to constantly track back and cheat to win free kicks. Given a free reign, Hazard would be completely unplayable.
Arjen Robben ended up falling out with Mourinho over his style of play but will the media ever bring these facts up? No. Granted they're champions but in the long run, I can't wait for KDB to come back to haunt him in our sky blue shirt.

Mourinhos comments are to save face tbh.. Chelsea sell him and then he goes on to be Bundesliga's player of the year with 20 assists... now this to me says that hes realised hes fooked up so is giving lame reasons for letting him go.. we all know that Maureen is an arrogant twat.

fookinell, if he's mentally weak and did what he did at Wolsgurg, what the fook will he be like when hes mentally strong . :)

its looking good Blues.

Mourinhos comments are all the evidence you ever needed that this is a done deal.

Happy days.

To be fair to the Chelsea manager there is little he can do with the fact that he now seems to have developed as a player which may have an impact on J.M.'s judgement when he discarded the player.

Whatever he says is unlikely to alter the already ''I'll show them'' mentality he is certain to have if he joins City.
I think there is a little of him taking note of the old Joe Mercer tactic here when his advice to hotheads was ''if you are going to retaliate make sure you do it first''.

Actually, if you read the full article, Mourinho isn't too critical of him at all. It's clickbait.

Basically De Bruyne wanted to go to a club where he'd play every week. I agree, a 22 year old footballer needs to be playing every week for his development.

De Bruyne is now 24, in his prime and ready to compete at a big club.

There's nothing wrong with Mourinho's comments. Some players thrive being the main man on the team others prefer secondary roles. More of an observation than criticism.

Nothing wrong ?

The thing that's wrong, is that he's commenting at all, on the mentality of a player from another club. Usually managers wish players the best & that's it. Even Brentan hasn't done this. Once again, this is Mourinho thinking purely of himself. It isn't to help Chelsea (how can it possibly ?) it isn't to destabilise DeBruyne or City (all it could ever do is motivate them more) it is 100% purely to protect his own arse from criticism, that he may have dropped a bollock, so he undermines the character of the player instead, to deflect it.

He is an utter **** & his comments are not right at all.
