Death of the pub, its impact on society.

But being the son of god your obviously gonna win the, "my dads bigger than your dad argument" ;)

I usually end up putting every penny I have in the Deal Or No Deal machine and spend the rest of the night scabbing drinks off my mates.

I like the atmosphere of a good pub but I'd say that only 1 in every 10 pub I've been in has been in any way decent.

See, if your dad had had you in pubs early doors you would of learned the art of pickpocketing

I didn't do anything but play football until I was about 10 or 11 when I discovered music and then I was always too busy with that. I went through a phase of going to the pub with my dad but it was pretty boring as he'd end up talking about work with his mates whilst I got pissed on my own or went on the machines, which come to think of it probably explains why I put all my money in them these days!

It's a generational thing like Ste said, me and my mates have always stayed in smoking weed, playing guitars, x box or whatever on week nights.

Whilst it may not be a 'pub', to a similar extent I enjoy the social interaction I get at my local Cricket Club, my Granddad goes and since I get on really well with him most of his friends seem like good blokes too. I've had many an interesting chat in there, when I go in, not a lot but day or night I'm welcome.

I live in Kendal, which has the most pubs in a square mile or something? Unfortunately, they get fuck all business and most are shutting down, oh and to add to that I've never been in many before because they're all.. dull in all honesty.

Wish i would of learned guitar pal so hat doffed to ya. Trouble was music teacher at school was known as 10 bob turner, stupid now but rumour had it he would drop 50p and when you bent to pick it up .....fill gaps

Karaoke was my thing midweek. Had a pissed up go one night got told i could sing a bit, so 3-4 pints and a sing song was my entertainment weeknights. Still public performance is a little more character building than live

What would make you go back into a pub?

or if you are of a similar generation to myself, what would make you start frequenting a pub like your ancestors did?

For me:

Better food, not this microwaved overpriced shite.
More live music, have all the myspace/xbox shit you want, can't beat hearing a live band.

Legalisation of cannabis.
Sorry but being in a room full of pissed up lads isn't good for relaxing... Being in a stoners cafe or something is alot more chilled.
I've never seen a fight in a weed cafe (no i don't smoke weed btw)
Seen way too many fights in and outside of pubs sadly :(

Never too late to learn, I'd go mental if I didn't have a guitar, it's my only proper addiction.

Club foot is a disability mate, i have club fingers. Bought both electric and acoustic guitars in the hope of inspiration (wish list before 40 fail), gave them away.

Steve
The more time people spend on virtual communication the less skills they gain from real interaction. Case in point, i say something stupid here on any social networking site, i can ignore it and let it die. Call someone a prick in the boozer, i better have reason or at the very least a tangible argument

My local sells carling for 2 pound a pint and trade s dying off okay carling not the est but it`s wet and does trick.IMO smoking ban killed pubs what was wrong with having tap room for smoking and snug for non smokers.
Smokers go out with mates who are none smokers so they will end up in the same room anyway

Very true.
Whereas now smokers go out with non smokers, get fed up of going outside on their own for a tab, so dont go anymore, their non smoking mates then think they are letting him down,so all go to mates house with a carry out where smoker can smoke leaving pub empty, or smokers go out for tab and non smoker is left feeling left out so smokers feel guilty and they decide to go to mates house where smokers can smoke and all enjoy the carry out.
Either way the pub loses trade, and when habits are formed in the winter, they are very hard to break in the summer when they could all sit in the beer garden and enjoy the weather regardless of smoking.
We were reliably informed that the smokers wouldnt be missed as all those that were put off going to the pub by the smoke would start going, more than making up the shortfall, well we can see by the boarded up pubs that that didnt work out.

Very interesting thread this. My dad played crown green bowls which meant I used to go round the pubs/clubs of south manchester 2/3 times a week from 9-14 ish surrounded by older people who looked after me and it definitely makes you more mature....

I also think 'kids' idea of what a pub is has changed, too often I go into so called pubs to hear blaring music or speed dating.

I know this won't be popular but IMO pubs have not been the same since the started letting women in 'the vault'.

I essentially grew up in a Working Mens Club, which was good fun. Never picked up the point of dominos though. Stupid game.
