In my younger days, I was vehemently opposed to the death penalty - so many cases you can point to such as Birmingham 6, Guilford 4, Stefan Kitsko etc where terribly injustices were perpetrated and would have been much worse if we'd had the death penalty.
As I've got older and had a litter of kids, it gets harder and harder not to think "hang the bastards" when I see such terrible crimes against children and such.
However, I still side with Martin Luther King - "an eye for an eye will only leave everybody blind".

Anybody who wants the death penalty should move to the US, China or saudi arabia. You will then be able to sleep easy at night.

If in a democracy the majority want to have the ultimate penalty for Murder why should they have to go and live anywhere else the way to end threads like this would be put it to the British Population and abide by the result, assuming this Country is a democracy of course.totallywired said:Anybody who wants the death penalty should move to the US, China or saudi arabia. Another thing to consider for death penalty supporters is the increased use of the joint enterprise law.
If your not familiar with it, it is an ancient law that had largely been forgotten about until it was used in a case a number of years ago and has since become increasingly common in cases where a death has occurred with a number of people present.
It is often used when gang activity is suspected but also in very dodgy situations where no one actually knows who within a group of people did what.
One case I know about personally is where two people turned up at someone's house that they had beef with. One of the people produced a baseball bat and hit the bloke a few times with it. He died. Both people present claimed it was the other one who carried out the attack. With no witnesses, they were both given life sentences under the joint enterprise law. Even though the judge fully accepted that one of them did nothing other than turn up knowing violence was a likely possibility.
There are many people serving life who's crime was to turn up to a situation knowing that a confrontation was likely but took no actual part in it.
Are we happy for these people to be executed?

There are areas where work is sporadic or unpredictable, where I can just about see it has a place but for companies like Sports Direct and G4S it is used almost exclusively to lessen the rights of their employees and make bypassing employment laws a whole lot easier.

100% for the death penalty in fully conclusive cases and those involved in multiple murders. Thugs like that Dale Cregan in my opinion do not deserve to be alive and also he does not deserve my money or the effort required to feed him and keep him alive.

As has been stated previously in the thread, to be members of the EU, no member state can have the Death Penalty.
So it's not going to happen.
