I guess Pelle has told him he wants him primarily for the Champions League. I think he will play, of course, in other games but with the purpose he will be 100% fit for CL games. In that way he will not hinder Nasty or other up coming prospects.
Since Pelle knows him, an offer of two years is a good move, I think!

If Kompany & Nastasic can both learn from him about how Pellegrini's system works and both become better defenders as a result then it will be a positive move despite his age.

Kompany can improve and needs an older head to teach him how to marshal the defence. Despite being a great defender I think Kompany sometimes needs a mentor or an older head to keep him a bit calmer when playing. He sometimes appears to be trying to do everything as a centre back and ends up covering both sides as a result, which results in him being caught out of position at times and then relying either on his speed or diving in and concedeing a foul instead of just getting on with his job.

It's impressive, he's much more able with the ball at his feet than our current backups.

Demichelis in between has very good matches - but he is not consistent.
