Denis Law and the Backheel - the Facts & Evidence

Thanks. It was Arundale School in Hattersley and those who went will know how much of a red Mr Hughes was. Above the stage was a school badge of sorts with George Best in the centre of it and our school team played in Utd kit. Understandably I never played for the school team (I was crap too, but I like to think it’s because of the kit!).
I was at St James’ in Hattersley and we played in Everton kits. I feel a lot better about that now.

I’ve read it and really enjoyed it.

It was a funny old season…..we had lost the league cup final a few weeks earlier then played United straight after at Maine Road for what must have been rearranged game….Dennis Tueart and Mickey Horswill making their debuts and Doyle and Macari refusing to leave the field after being sent off…Ron Saunders then sacked and then the Derby at OT.

Last league game for Franny as well as Law.
Thanks. Appreciated.

Haven't read the link yet as I'm at work. But I understand that the back heel didn’t send them down per se, as they'd have dropped even if they'd won, due to results elsewhere.
But they didn't know that at the time.... and it's still brilliant to have put the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the corpse.

What makes it funnier was that Law was offside when Franny passed to him. At that time you had to be behind the 2nd last defender ( goalie is a defender).
It’s not a great angle off the tv but looking at the 6 yard line Law is level, not behind Houston.

Not noticed before, hahaha.
If only they'd had VAR.....

I understand having just realised there may have been an offence (offside) United are seriously considering a review HAHAHAHA

So; you could have said "Houston, we have a problem".

Coat donned, taxi ordered.

I was a 16 year old in the scoreboard end that day and it wasn't good, it was all ticket so no rags should have been in our end, but they were already in when we got in, so the silk scarf disappeared down my pants, they came on the pitch before the game just to get into the scoreboard end, and there was a constant stream coming from both sides of the ground, By the start of the game there were two small groups of City fans on either side of the stand, less than 1000 in each so a total of 2000 approx. Everyone kept quiet so not to attract attention, when Denis scored we didn't cheer we looked at one another and quickly left keeping heads down, once we got on the match bus back to town it was full of Blues and the celebrations started, a crazy day not to be forgotten.
