That's a fair assessment. My mum works in an old people's home, and from what she's told me, I think the programme would have been a fair representation of what goes on. I am a Gervais fan, but was a bit uncomfortable with his character at first, but after 10 minutes I stopped thinking of him taking the piss out of people like that and warmed to it. Yeah I cried at the end.
First few minutes I didn't know what to make of it. Then I really started to enjoy it. It was raw emotional and quite sad for the most part.
The last scene when the nurse and the guy get together and Derek scurries after them was the bit theat made me laugh most. At that point I was laughing and crying at the same time, and anything that can do that to a person is IMO pretty special.
