Diego Carlos

Apparently, Koulibaly had a poor game last night against Inter. Is this guy a better alternative? 2 years younger, and €15—20m cheaper. Haven't seen much of him in action, so I can't comment on who's the actual better player.

I was hoping someone on here would have watched Sevilla a bit this season and could give their opinion but I guess the La Liga broadcasting situation has been a farce.

If we're talking about a similar but ever so slightly lower fee, it doesn't sound particularly exciting.

Big potential this guy--I know he's already 27, but what I mean by that is I see him knocking on the world class door already but needs to continue to show his level to get that title.

Good looking too, from a marketing standpoint. Very fast and very physically fit. He's absolutely shredded.

60-75mil for him....Thought covid would make players cheaper..it's done the opposite.

It will gut the lower end of the transfer market in time. Poor clubs will be exponentially poorer as the lack of income starts to bite. The clubs that need to sell tickets and pies and burgers and scarves to survive will at some point go under, their players will become free agents and that bottom end of the market will be all supply and no demand.

At the top clubs have more diversified income but income will still be down. The bargains will be picking up the talent uncontested from lower down the leagues not from other top clubs and in competition with other CL clubs were it just becomes an auction.

Prefer Diego Carlos to Koulibaly, younger and still quick and powerful, I also think they'll be less expectation on the player which will allow him to settle more.
Happy with either. KK has just proven more and for longer is the difference. Quality is in both. Only seen Carlos a little bit, just the big games, which isn't enough to know a player but sometimes you just only need to see a player a couple times to know they're good and he's got that trait.

I have seen a little bit so can’t form a massive opinion but he’s that dominant sort of centre back. He was the best defender in La Liga - so was Otamendi In his final year at Valencia. But this guy is absolutely rapid for CB. Van Dijk level of rapid. He’s a powerhouse like Koulibaly. Seville are a defensive side and rather dull to watch so unsure whether it’s the system or him, but he seems like a late developer more than anything else. I’m actually converting wanting him more than Koulibaly personally.
Sorry it’s not a lot of info bar the generic but hope it helps.

This feels very Otamendi to me. Playing mid-table in France for 5 years, has 1 breakout season in La Liga, then a big money move? No european experience, no track record at the highest level.

If he were 30-40m I'd be OK with it, but for 10m less than Koulibaly, give me the guy who has been playing at the top of the game for 4 years already.

Also he can't make a tackle without going to ground.

Agree that KK has the ability and much needed experience I just worry about price tags and exceptions especially for defenders for some reason. I just feel it's easier to call out defenders when they concede a goal vs say an exciting winger at the same price tag. Look at both Stones and Maguire, good players torn to shreds because of expectations and price tags.

I still feel Stones can become a class player but I think the ship has sailed from the club's point of view.

Looks like the part but youtube videos can be flattering. The only concern is for a player who has been around for so many years he has only one season at the top level. Also pretty expensive for a guy who just started getting any recognition.

If he is like a certain other Brazilian we signed at the age of 28 then please let's do it. Else Seville needs to drive down the price a bit

Bayern were linked to this guy couple of weeks ago to replace Hernandez potentially.

It must be said that Koulibaly has had pretty average season. This guy also seems quality and is 2 years younger. Though the risk of him not working out is obviously greater due to him having only 1 good season so far at the top level.

Probably the best bet if the club is not prepared to pay €75m-€80m for 29 year old Koulibaly.

Also shows the lack of quality CBs around, just when we need one or two.

No that's really useful, cheers.

As far as I can tell, Lopetegui prefers to line up with four at the back as well. Not to overdo the Otamendi comparison but I was guessing that this guy might be standing out with two other centrebacks alongside to help him out but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'll fully admit I've barely watched Sevilla this season but agree with other posters on it sounding like Otamendi 2.0

He MIGHT be world class at our level, but 3 years finishing 7th, 9th and 12th in France with a very good year for a Sevilla side seemingly achieving way above their expectations leaves me worried. I do prefer Koulibaly because he's got the evidence to back up how good he's consistently been against the big teams in the CL as well in recent seasons despite performing below his level this year (in a year where Napoli have been absolutely woeful all round), but I trust in Pep & the board to make the right decision.

I like the look of him - younger than Koulibaly and no AFCON obligations either. Looks like more of a warrior than Laporte and Koulibaly too, so stylistically could be the post-Kompany solution to our soft defence. If he could be gotten for circa £35m, he’d be worth the risk.

Only worry would be the fact he’d come from Sevilla, a club where mediocre players seem to perpetually peak - then decline back to their natural level once they move on for big money; filthy doping hub. Liverpool would probably be a more appropriate move for him in that regard.....

It's lucky we're so good at scouting centerbacks, because normally you'd be very wary of buying a 27 year old with great physical attributes but only one good season under his belt for anything close to what Koulibaly would cost.
