Disabled and Free Parking

You mean it's not called the Globe anymore?

My mum died 3 years ago, and I had a blue badge in my car for her when I took her into Ashton - mainly to the doctors' on Glebe street. She was crippled with arthritis, and going into Ashton in her latter years from the Moss was the only thing she ever did, as she'd meet up with my aunties for a coffee and a chat. So when she couldn't manage even that, I stepped in to help her - that's what sons are for.

It's all right "freeing up a few parking spots", but they're targeting the wrong sector of society, in my opinion. The people they will lose, like my mum, were the people who bought things on their trips into town, and knew the shopkeepers, whereas this may not be the case in the future.

Ah well, I suppose this is progress (I think that's the word).
Exactly, all the council car spots in Ashton have to be paid for by blue badge holders no free places since 2012 which is bad enough but they waste thousands on speed humps and painting yellow lines everywhere especially up the Broadoak Rd and Hartshead area. Sorry a bit off topic that.
Not been in the Broadoak since the Fivepenny Piece left!
It's the same landlord since then

I really couldn't give a shit about this :) it's nothing. But regarding the human nature thing, I'm not sure that's true, that's too broad. I know I wouldn't abuse it if I had a disability but was able to walk. I'd feel like a right dick jogging back to my car next to some bloke struggling to get in in his wheelchair.
There are people that will abuse it and people that don't, I phrased that badly, I should have said that there always will be some people that use it because they have the entitlement to have a blue tag on their car, even when they don't need to. I had an interesting conversation about this with a work colleague a while back concerning children's allowance. Both of us are entitled to it, neither of us are financially dependant on it, but he collects it and I don't. I don't blame him for collecting it but I think I realise better than he does that the money has to come from somewhere and usually it's from the pocket of somebody that could use it more. The same applies here and to issues like social housing imo.

Children's allowance?

What do you mean?

Child benefit or child tax credit?

I don't know about the free parking spaces, but at the supermarkets where it's all free, they have those spaces with the wheelchair painting on the tarmac. But people who can walk fine always park in them...what's that about?
3 possibilities.
They have a disability that doesn't affect their ability to walk.
They're responsible for the transport of a disabled family member and get the blue badge.
They're wankers.
I actually witnessed a proper ding dong only a few months ago in sainsbury's car park regarding this
The Disabled person stayed in the car and the daughter went shopping while parked in a wheelchair slot,it was a fellow disabled person who was argueing saying it was out of order parking there if your mum or whoever is not leaving the vehicle........

It is not only out of order it is a misuse of a blue badge that could lead to losing it.

I work with a lad who has 1 leg, works full time, has motorbility car & plays football for Great Britain yet he has a blue parking badge.

Just because you're classed as disabled doesn't mean you cannot work.

Can someone please explain why if you're disabled you get to park in a lot of places for free? I agree with special disabled places nearer to entrances etc, but why should it be free?

Because a car is a necessity for disabled people. They cannot walk to the shops.

I agree they should have special parking bays, but you didn't answer my question as to why they are free.

At least half a dozen other posters have answered your question.
