Disabled and Free Parking

Can someone please explain why if you're disabled you get to park in a lot of places for free? I agree with special disabled places nearer to entrances etc, but why should it be free?

Because a car is a necessity for disabled people. They cannot walk to the shops.

This is obviously the answer.

A civilised society shouldn't have to think twice about trying to make life a little easier for people with disabilities.

And this is the best post on the thread

Passed a council car park on Church street in Ashton last week - a good walk in any case from the precinct and market area.

There is a sign up that says that blue badge holders now have to pay the same as you or I.

Nice to see a solid Labour council being non-discriminatory.

Exactly the point every one seems to miss, we can choose to walk, jog, run or cycle to the shops, sadly disabled blue badge holders have no choice,

This is the point exactly, I have no choice but to go by car to where ever I go.

why don't you get a throne made like Rascal's? could get carried around everywhere.

I think they have had to pay for some time now, the new council offices will be fantastic though and they will need extra car spaces for the new 6th form college that's being built right on the site of the current offices. So making blue badge holders pay will surely put them off visiting Ashton town centre and free up a few parking spots.

To be fair even with free parking there would be very little reason to visit Ashton town centre these days .

An acquaintance of mine knocks out some very good gear in the Bowling Green,it's definitely a one stop shopping centre.

Haven't been to Ashton for years. Going to the Witchwood this weekend watching a Pink Floyd tribute (I know) it used to be alright

You mean it's not called the Globe anymore?

My mum died 3 years ago, and I had a blue badge in my car for her when I took her into Ashton - mainly to the doctors' on Glebe street. She was crippled with arthritis, and going into Ashton in her latter years from the Moss was the only thing she ever did, as she'd meet up with my aunties for a coffee and a chat. So when she couldn't manage even that, I stepped in to help her - that's what sons are for.

It's all right "freeing up a few parking spots", but they're targeting the wrong sector of society, in my opinion. The people they will lose, like my mum, were the people who bought things on their trips into town, and knew the shopkeepers, whereas this may not be the case in the future.

Ah well, I suppose this is progress (I think that's the word).

That was very much before my time.. The Globe.

Of course, nothing is like it used to be. No 'community' in the community, shops are profit first and customer second. Like you say, progress.

Exactly, all the council car spots in Ashton have to be paid for by blue badge holders no free places since 2012 which is bad enough but they waste thousands on speed humps and painting yellow lines everywhere especially up the Broadoak Rd and Hartshead area. Sorry a bit off topic that.
Not been in the Broadoak since the Fivepenny Piece left!
