Discuss Pellegrini (Pt 2)

I must admit, credit must be given to Pelligrini for yesterday's performance.

A previous poster referred to our formation being fluid or a "loose framework" which the players work to, which is exactly how it appeared to me during the game.

There were times when I couldn't work out exactly what our formation was!

Sometimes it looked like a 4-1-2-1-2 "diamond" midfield shape with Fernandinho being the anchor, Yaya
supporting the strikers with Silva/Milner out wide, then it would switch to a 4-3-3 with Fern/Yaya and Milner as midfield and Silva out as a left sided forward, and then back to a 4-2-2-2 formation, so we did seem to have a very fluid formation, throughout the game.

Wherease under Mancini we did appear to stick with a basic formation fairly consistently throughout the game.

Home form under Pelegrini is not in question he will be judged on our away form this season because that's where teams win leagues

True

But worth adding that a home win on the Saturday after a difficult game on Wednesday night was a potential banana-skin especially as we went 1-0 down against a previously unbeaten team.

We're in a better place now than we were when we lost at Cardiff, and shakily beat Hull at home.

Negredo and Fernandinho are settling in and looking very good buys, and the next step is to win away.

Look at our performances in recent games. marked improvement (ignore Bayern)

I can see why you'd like to think so,truth is,i had to reign myself in.

Really? I had to read it 3 times because I honestly thought you were taking the piss.

Care to provide us with your more 'balanced' opinion?

Happy to. Good performance and good result especially on the back of Wednesday. If we are going to credit Pellers for 'masterminding' a relatively routine home win in the PL there will be a lot of 'masterminding' this season. Where Pellers does get credit is for taking our set pieces up several notches. That has been impressive.

Several have mentioned the loose structure from previous seasons and there is truth in that. Mancini installed a default defensive mode and then added an attack mode and we could switch between the two. The culmination of this was obviously the title winning season where we had the best defensive record and the best attack in terms of goals conceded and goals scored. Now we have a default setting where we start on the front foot and stay there - a more attacking mode if you like. This appears to be the club policy judging by Ferran's comments and so be it.

It does mean that there is an inherent vulnerability in the system which means we will concede goals and drop points and is one of two reasons why I am slightly pessimistic about our chances of winning the title. The second reason is Pellers in game management which is non existent. I highlighted this earlier in the season with his tendency to sub by numbers and sub when it was detrimental to the flow of the game from our perspective. Wednesday just exposed this. Pellers either cannot, or chooses not to, influence the game when its going wrong or make corrections before it starts to go wrong. Against a lot of teams this will not matter as we have the quality to compensate for this but against the top teams and the better managers our one dimensional approach and in game tactical passivity will be found out. This also maybe the reason why Pellers has never won a major trophy in Europe.

My opinion based on 9 competitive games.

I thought we did ok at home against an average PL team.

In what way average?? the prem has the best diversity of good teams in Europe, thats why the tv rights are astronomical..

If you want easy games then you need to head north of the border Wayne..

Any team we beat are a pub team. Any team who beats us aren't that good either. We must be really shit.

He picked the right team but we still look very open in midfield. If Silva had gone wide at any point there was a huge space in the middle of the pitch ahead of Fernaninho and Yaya, behind Agüero and Negredo. It's a problem, oppositions are picking the ball up in that area too easily and are able to start attacks.

Luckily we played Lukaku very well and weren't damaged too much by it yesterday but it's been a problem in all games apart from Newcastle and United.

Excellent post Bob which highlights how our tactics have changed this season. I along with a fair few others on here do not believe we will the title this season due to the reasons you state and also our inconsistent performances away from home. More like top 3 spot all being well.

The only part of your post which really matters IMO.

And applies to 99.9% of posts on here. My opinion and the points I raised are not set in stone. Make a counter argument.
