Discussion: Manuel Pellegrini 2015/16

Ever since he got here I thought Kolorov was a bobbins defender. We'd be better off chucking him on as an out and out winger for the last half hour when we need a goal. In fairness to MP he set his stall out and promised attacking football from day one, he never mentioned defending. My worry is that the shaky defense robs the attack/midfield of confidence going forward. That's what it looked like last season, and even though I hate Jose's turgid football, sometimes that's what it takes to get a result. We're in danger of being an expensive version of KK's 90's Newcastle with 7 goals in every game.

Tbh I don't mind if we win 7-6 but imo our biggest problem has been lack of pressing/workrate as a team. Our defence has kept a tight line & not been that bad as a 4, apart from one or two stinkers. Today, was like watching Alan Ball's back 4 with Kit Symons etc. Even for a pre season game, it was appalling. They were really easy goals to stop.

Not really pre season does not mean anything, we get this crap every year, people getting themselves all worked up over practise matches it's as predictable as it is pathetic and embarrassing
I'm not normally one for knee jerk reactions, but I'm sorry you cannot paper over that first 45 minutes, pre season or not.

It was worse than woeful, and with the exception of George Evans, that could well be most of the starting 11 for WBA.

Stuttgart aren't that great a side that we should find ourselves at 0-4 after 36 minutes, they narrowly (2points) avoided relegation from the Bundesliga, a league considered somewhat worse in general quality to the PL.

Now I understand that we had players missing, but the defensive show was from all 4 probable starters at WBA, and they were nothing short of a shambles, that we had to bring on a 19 year old to improve things says it all. The midfield were no better, none of them took any responsibility until Zuculini came on (and if we are thinking he's the second coming we'll be wrong). In that first half only 1 player did anything to think he deserves a start at WBA, and that was David Silva, the rest were just awful.

The second half saw us improve (I only saw the first 20 minutes), but we frankly couldn't have got any worse.

It should not be papered over it was abject, pre season or not. I hope it was a huge wake up call to the club, because this pre-season has been a disjointed mess, with too many key players missing/scattered across the world/on planes, with some pretty poor fixtures imho, I've no idea what the point of the Vietnam fixture was, and why were we playing a full strength Real Madrid 3rd game, when we knew we'd be missing half (or more) of the first team, goodness knows. Whoever planned this pre-season needs to answer some questions, and I doubt its Pellegrini.

Tbf Kit would have scored at least one for the opposition defending a corner, or attempting a backpass ;-)

The pre-season has been largely rubbish in fairness... Stuttgart and Real games couldn't have appealed to our two big targets who are looking to contend with us for major competitions nor to team confidence just shortly before the season starts. About the only good point was that we had a chance to see and evaluate some of the eds players in action and Sterling who has been excellent.

We probably should have taken both games more seriously as a 'recital' for our quickly approaching season start.

Youve got to question MP's tactical nous , with just a week before the season kicks off , and our defence looks more like Kompany's Keystone Cops than a solid impregnable unit required to win a premiership , he's got a hell of a lot of work to do in the next seven days , because a very average german team has just ripped us to pieces without breaking into a sweat.

Pulis will already be thinking, just pump high balls into City's area and that equals total confusion, ready for Lambert to pounce. Great time to play us next week.

Just to inject a bit of perspective, When did we last have a decent pre-season? I can't remember any that got me excited tbh.

Manuel wore me out at the tail end of last season, so much so that I would have been happy enough to see him move on if a class replacement could have been found (I honestly thought we would go balls out for Klopp and us not doing so is why I think Pep will actually rock up here next season).

The seeming inability to organise a defence is hard to watch at times, pre season or not, that first goal today was a joke. I think we will get our shit together once we are playing for real, but I do fear that this will become something of a throw away season with the obvious departure of the manager on the cards at the end of it. Hopefully that wont be allowed to happen, but I would not be in the least bit surprised to see Paddy V holding down the fort for a while if things go tits up after Christmas.
